GuestI wanted to start some back chatter on this, because I think it provides a good example to discuss how we help people on this site. This site is new. We’re trying to figure out how to make this idea work. We’re going to receive people here at the site that are still passionate and angry about some topics. I believe Salo wants to stay in the Church. I think it’s therapuetic for him to be able to express his feelings about this sensitive topic here. We can provide a better tone than other places more hostile to the Church. He’d get a lot of gasoline for his fire elsewhere.
I was thinking about how the discussion is going, and thinking about how he started to somehow become defensive. I don’t believe it is personal against us. It’s a lot of penned up frustration. Its a frustrating topic. Its good for him to let out some of that steam with us.
How are you guys seeing it?
I’m still ok with the tone. I would like us to continue deflating the tension level in the conversation. There’s a natural tendancy to try and win a debate. I have to hold myself back, because that is not the point. The point is to help him deal with his frustrations.
I bring this up because the exact same situation will happen many times in the future here. We will receive people here who are still angry about things. Heck, I still sometimes get frustrated. I’m sure we all do.

GuestI’m still okay, although it would be nice if we had more commenters (some who are not mods) speaking up on the topic as well. Our followership isn’t big enough yet. We should maybe post a link to the site on MM and we could also see if we could get other b’nacle sites to do a link also. What do you think? December 4, 2008 at 10:53 pm #214220Anonymous
GuestWe need some advertising at this point. I agree. I like the idea. We could post a link from MM. I could also write a post, sort of like I did with FacesEast and the interview with Prairie_Chuck. We could look into optimizing the site for search engines too maybe? I don’t know as much about that. Actually, I have a friend that is really into that as a business. I could probably mine her brain for some useful information.
I think the mormonstories podcasts will provide a draw. I really appreciate being allowed to host those.
Patience and persistence is the key IMO. Other sites have been out there for years and years.

GuestTaking this back to the forums from the email Old-Timer from Email wrote:Just so everyone knows, Salo sent me a PM asking why I was at StayLDS, since my comments were “apologetic” in nature. I sent him/her a fairly long response, basically saying (in a nutshell) that my comments come from the perspective of having passed through the stages, embraced uncertainty, being freed by that acceptance and intentionally choosing to structure the view I want to have. I also said very clearly that I wasn’t trying to convince anyone to see things as I see them, but simply to share how I’ve decided to see them. I tried to stress that how I see things is a conscious choice of various options.
You did exactly right IMO Ray! *You* are here as a leader and mentor. You made it through the journey as far as you have in your own way. There isn’t only one way to get there. You shared how you did it. I thought it was a great example. It isn’t exactly how I went, but your path worked for you. Our purpose is to present tools. People can use them or not, or they can invent their own.
We can’t let people throw us off track. Salo is obviously very sensitive about this topic. He isn’t done with it yet inside himself. That’s ok. He will process it his own way in his own time.
