Could someone please tell me what NOM is?

NOM is an abbreviation for New Order Mormon. It is a label for a style of “middle-way” belief in Mormonism. It is also a well-established website and discussion forum on the topic of LDS faith. You can find them at:

    website: http://www.newordermormon.org

    forums: http://forum.newordermormon.org/index.php

Many of us here might consider ourselves to be “NOMs.” I don’t so much, but I understand and agree with others who do. The definition at their website says “New Order Mormons are those who no longer believe some (or much) of the dogma or doctrines of the LDS Church, but who want to maintain membership for cultural, social, or even spiritual reasons.” I think I am on the border of that definition, spiritual reasons being a major factor for me, not a minor side reason. In practice, the people at the NOM site don’t believe very much anymore, and many have left the Church completely. It is a different slice of our community, one that I both love and respect. You will also find me at times participating on their discussion boards. I am careful how I participate there so as to be a good member of their community.

I’ve met Dathon, the main administrator, in the real world. He is a really cool guy. I like him a lot. Their discussion group has a little different purpose than ours, but we are similar in ways. Take a look at the other thread in this forum section for a long discussion on the differentiation.

There are a lot of those acronyms that fly around the DAMU (DisAffected Mormon Underground) and the Bloggernacle (combination word of Blog + Mormon Tabernacle). We should probably post a reference list here like they do at other sites.

Yes, an acronym reference is always helpful. I remember not seeing the reference for DAMU for the longest time and I wondered if it meant “DAMnation University!” (In a reversed sarcastic kind of way of course.)
