GuestThank you so much for allowing me to join the board.
This looks like a very friendly place.
I have been a member of the Church all my life, but over the past several years, I have been struggling with some doctrinal issues….mainly polygamy, and the whole concept of eternal progression.
Like others have mentioned in various threads, sometimes I feel like I am living a lie. I go to Church, smile at what everyone else is saying, and bury my doubts so no one will think ill of me.
Until recently, I played the piano for primary, so I could kind of “escape” from Sunday School and RS lessons.
😆 My Fibromyalgia has worsened, and I have problems playing for that long of a span, so I had to be released. The health issue has also caused problems because I get a lot of questions when I miss Church on Sundays. There are just some Sundays when I hurt too badly to attend. Fibromyalgia is very misunderstood. When I was first diagnosed, my husband seriously thought it was all in my head.
It is the most frustrating ailment for someone who is active. I have a 20 year old daughter, a 17 year old daughter, and a 5 year old son. In addition to teaching some college courses online, I also run my own business. I teach voice and piano in my private home music studio. So, having this is really discouraging when there is constantly so much to do.

Like someone else here mentioned, I also had a serious fall-out with FAIR/MAD a few years ago. I would rather not go into details, but, needless to say, I was also banned from MAD.
😆 I am also one of the Moderators for Dr. Shades’ Mormon Discussions Board. I have grown very attached to many of the posters there….but lately there has been a lot more drama and a lot more “catfights” than I really care to contend with. I still post there, but I have really been searching for a support network of folks kind of like myself, who want to stay active, and have a basic LDS belief, but are questioning different aspects of the Church, and just need a place to discuss some of these things without feeling like the “odd man out”.
I look forward to some fun discussions with all of you!

Liz

GuestWelcome to the site, Liz! I am really enjoying the discussions here, I hope you do too. I you find my posts too sickly sweet, just let me know. I’ll toss in a cussword or two to keep it real.

GuestLiz, welcome aboard. I’ve only been on this board for a week or so and it’s been incredibly helpful to me. I only recently realized how angry I really was. I want to go and be more active at church, but being so angry makes it impossible. I hope you can find as much help here as I have. March 25, 2009 at 2:51 am #216223Anonymous
GuestOh, and how’s your husband if you don’t mind my asking? Is he in a pretty traditional place or in the gutter with us?

He’s very TBM….but he accepts the fact that I am an eternal naughty wife. LOL

GuestHi Liz, Welcome to the forums. It’s nice to meet you.

Guest“an eternal naughty wife” I’m not going to touch that one. My slightly . . . questionable . . . sense of humor might get me in trouble.
😮 Welcome. You sound like so many of the people here – right down to the musical talent. (Frankly, I think that is a relatively unexplored aspect of those who question. The LDS Church’s focus on music and what that does to an already inquisitive nature is interesting to me, but that’s for a future post, perhaps.)

GuestLiz, welcome, from one eternally naughty wife to another. My DH likes to tell the kids, “Sorry, but your mother’s going to hell.” March 25, 2009 at 9:27 pm #216227Anonymous
GuestI won’t share the limericks and poems I whisper to my wife during some Sacrament Meetings – often parodies of hymns. I get smacked regularly in church. March 25, 2009 at 11:14 pm #216228Anonymous
GuestI’m a pretty big fan of Toscano’s “Music and the Broken Word”. Our hymns really do lend themselves to that kind of thing, with the simple tunes and familiarity. March 26, 2009 at 2:54 am #216229Anonymous
GuestI probably shouldn’t add any further clarifications, but I’ll just say that Catholic nuns (and lots of fellow members) would be scandalized at my ribald sense of humor. Some of the best jokes I’ve ever heard are ones I would never share with your stereotypical group of Mormons – but I’ve also found that there are WAY more members who appreciate my type of humor than most people think. GuestHi Liz I noticed your name as visiting the site and got curious and ended up here, I guess that shows a snoopy disposition but we can’t all be perfect.
I think Ray has something going with the connection between music and questioning. On the one hand I think music is the quickest and perhaps surest way to get in contact with the Holy Ghost. There are many weeks that I wish we could sing hymns all sacrament meeting insteading of listening to some of the predictable, pay your tithing (you are either going to do it or not and talks aren’t going to make a bit of a difference IMHO
) , do your home teaching, follow the prophet etc. etc.
On the other side of the coin is that the spiritual sensitivity is very much alive and questing and not willing to simply hum in the background, we want a tune to sing, a chord to play and harmony to reach. So when the musical soul runs into “discordant notes” it hits with a jar and we have to question.
(small question, what is MAD?? I think FAIR is the Mormon apologetics people but I haven’t been around the Bloggernacle very long and don’t know all the shortcuts).

Hmm, lots of truth to all this, IMHO! My father and I sang in a few choirs together, including that one affectionately called the “MoTab.” He and I have had lives full of church music, and consider them the most spiritual times in church. In a previous ward, we just happened to have about a dozen former Motabbers…I looked so forward to the meetings being over to get to choir practice….awwwh, such sweet harmony! And yes, I think there is a common thread among musicians about questioning…and even compassion for the less accepted. Just my opinion…
Oh, and “MAD” is the Mormon Apologetics and Discussion Board. A bit heady, quite argumentative and demoralizing to those who don’t tow the line. There’s a few major jerks that never got over their bully syndrome in the 4th grade. Anybody looking for the “feel good” trait of the LDS church should not venture there….
Btw, welcome Liz! I was BishopRic on the other boards….
