:D I’m reading some really cool sermons from Joseph Smith and I swear (not really) that he seems gnostic to me. All about knowledge and secrets. It’s kinda cool because I find myself drawn to “gnostic gospels” and things of that nature.

Do any of you wish you could hear Joseph give a sermon in real life? I sure do. I think it would be awesome if we could just go on youtube and watch all the sermons he ever gave! I bet we would quickly see why people were drawn to him.

Those are my random thoughts for tonight. What about you?

    I agree with that description.

I think Joseph was a cosmic explorer – that he would have been an astronaut in our modern times. I think Brigham was a hands-on settler – that he would have been a programmer in modern times. I often wonder what the Church would have been like if Brigham had been like Joseph – and I tend to conclude that it wouldn’t have survived. There’s only so much radical change that can occur before those involved get whiplash.

I also think it’s interesting to see the interplay of personalities of those who have led the Church since (and including) Joseph. There is a pendulum effect that I find fascinating – especially since each president became an apostle decades before becoming president.

Sorry for the slight threadjack. I am interested in others’ views of Joseph as gnostic.

Gnosticism as a major Christian schism looks at the great creator as evil, or at least somewhat wayward. The creation is thereby colored as being evil or a dark reflection of heaven, and matter and sex and all earthly ‘things’ are wicked, evil, bad, and etc. There was a denial of a physical resurrection.

Joseph did not hold that view, though he certainly did have the Apostolic Gnosis, and believed in the utility of gnosis (as a Greek word, and what it means) itself.

Joseph clearly agreed with some basic principles of Kabbalah as well, though he did not agree with the Kabbalaistic view that learning and developing was not for the young nor the Foolish.

    FYI

HiJolly, you’re right. That’s why I left it lower case. I was mostly struck by his fascination with “hidden treasures of knowledge” and the fact he spoke about unlocking secrets in the scriptures and knowledge a lot. Thanks for the clarification!

There are tons of luscious little gems in the D&C and BoM to back up your opinion, just search on ‘seek’ ‘find’ ‘knock’ ‘keys’ ‘asking’ ‘receiving’ and that sort of thing. ;)
