GuestMark L. McConkie wrote this, copyright 2003. Chapter One is “The Problem and Promise of Historical Memories”. A very good lead-in! The rest was pretty much pure quotes and no editorializing – at least I don’t remember any…
I enjoyed the book, but Mark was a tad selective in that he did not include a couple of ‘Memories’ that I recall reading elsewhere that were not very flattering of Joseph. In all fairness, Mark did include a few like this, but not some I have dug up in the past, that I was watching for. Oh well.
All in all, a very enjoyable read.

GuestI am always looking for new stories/memories about key events and even just day to day happenings in the early church to share with my youth gospel doctrine class. I find that the “standard” stories that have been used in various manuals and some on the Ensign have just been overexposed. Does this book provide new material that would be interesting, give new insight into the way life was really lived?
How is the book organized? Would it be easy to find stuff on a particular topic, say the winter at Winter Quarters or staying at Fort Bridger, or the branch in Colesville/Manchester/Fayette ?
Sorry to be so snoopy, but I kind of want to get the book but am not sure it really contains what I want. Thanks.

GuestAh HiJolly I think we may be talking to each other across a cultural divide: Quote:Check it out at the library. There is a CD included that should prove helpful.
It is virtually certain, living in central British Columbia, that I couldn’t find the book in a library within 400 miles. Now it just might be in one of the University libraries in Vancouver. So up here in the “mission field” we have to make the decision to purchase a book if we really want to read it, it is pretty well impossible to borrow, even from a friend, since not that many people actually purchase that kind of book. There is a sense in our Stake that if you’ve actually got some time for reading it should be your scriptures, after that books by General Authorities, after that books for work.
Thanks a lot for your follow up I appreciate it, I am one step closer to purchasing it. Thank goodness for places like Amazon where we can get pretty well any book online.
