GuestSpent last week at the local community church. Very nice and I came away thinking, “why can’t we have music like that?” Even their rendition of How Great Thou Art, was so awesome. Come on Mormons, your services don’t have to feel and sound like a funeral. My 11 year old boy felt the spirit, and got teary eyed, which made me get a little teary.
We passed on the chance to take communion…not sure the protocol for such things.
So this morning, we decide about 30 minutes before church that we can do the whole Mormon church today, after getting such a spiritual experience at Solid Rock the week before.
Boys wore their white shirts. Daughter did not attend.
A nice older lady gave a VERY sincere talk about her conversion and THE TEMPLE. She was sincere, not condescensing or arrogant. I can live with that…even if the message is, well…crap.
Anyway, SM lasted about 35 minutes. After, Counselor got in my face about how long we were going to stay this week. I was nice…but barely. BP saved me (and him), and pulled all of us in the office and thanked us for coming out. No shop talk. No Bishop hat etc etc.
Jwald made the comment that she did not want to say anything to hurt that ladies testimony and faith, and that if that was going to be the case, we will have to continue to limit our participation.
All in all, pretty good day. Walking out I heard the adult Sunday teacher justifying the Iraq war using BOM Scriptures and stories…I just kept on a walking.

GuestThey really just can’t chill out there for long, can they? I’ve been in small military branches that were really welcoming and chilled out. So it can’t just be the pressure of a small congregation and trying to do too much. August 18, 2012 at 7:31 pm #220428Anonymous
GuestCWALD as you well know church is full of speculation, urban legends, false doctrine. But once you move past all that Church is pretty awesome. I while an absolute TBM rose colored galsses, also don’t tolerate well all the non doctrine that gets shared as doctrine and true…. but remember they too are on a journey coming along slowly but progressing August 23, 2012 at 3:05 am #220429Anonymous

If they would only allow it. It is a continual fight for me… orthodoxy or apostasy. My family is unable to see or even consider any type of middle way.

Guestwould it help if you had a bridge builder like me who could be a go between in understanding both the orthodoxy and also the flexibility our faith at it’s roots gives us? For example once one sees the progression the church has made over time in it’s tone and treatment of SSA individuals they orthodox member then has to confront the non-linear thinking and has to make changes to their position. This can be done on multiple issues but must come from one they see as faithful and reasonable. Even if you are both they notion is not in agreement. they need a bridgebuilder from my perspective. They need a faithful orthodox member to tell them it is ok to think differently and still be a member of the church

GuestYep. Absolutely. That is why I asked you to visit this site. Members, and many local leaders need to hear your message….from a faithful church leader…It is the only way to stop the hemorrhaging and bleeding that is happening in the church , IMO. And yeah, my SP and family members (SP, HC, HC, B councilor DO READ THIS BOARD on occasion…to keep tabs on my apostasy.

GuestWe tend naturally to fight so many fights that need not be fought. That’s true of nearly everyone – and it is strongest at the extremes of orthodoxy AND heterodoxy. That’s one reason why a “middle way” is so important – that’s is not natural. Mormons should be the leaders of recognizing the need to not drift to natural extremes – but, again, it occurs at both extremes on the -doxy line.
