John, what are your specific goals with the essay?

Let’s get that thing knocked out.

Not to be the resident technican moron, but what the hey. . . How do we do what we need to do step by step to make edits, etc.?? Some of us are less gifted than others at this.

I am all for a full review and edit. I know you’ve wanted to do that for a long time John. I just want to throw out there that FAIR is not our audience. They don’t need help. I am all for listening and considering suggestions from them. They could provide some solid insights. But …

I don’t think we should change the essay to the point where FAIR officially approves of it, and likes it. It has to be honest, blunt and practical advice to people in crisis-mode. These people are generally very turned off by FAIR’s approach.

To me, FAIR is a great resource for people who don’t actually have problems. It makes TBM members feel like someone out there in the Church is super-smart and is answering the lies of Satan and all his “Anti'” minions. I think that is a great role to play in the world of internet mormonism. It is needed, but it doesn’t generally help the people we are working with.

I can still hear the words of this nice brother in our Bishopric here, when we were making small chit chat one Sunday about my wife and kids being inactive. “I think there’s this site on the internet or something that anwers all those questions. It’s called FAIR …. or something like that.” He said uncomfortably. It was nice of him. I rolled my eyes on the inside. But it was an obvious reminder to me that people like him (he is very nice and I like him) have no clue how to deal with all this mess, and frankly can’t handle it.
