…asking for clarification on his purpose here. With an avatar of “trouble” and quoting from the bible as if it’s absolute and infallible has me wondering.

    I’ll keep this thread updated.

    His reply:

I was LDS for some time, my purpose here is to talk to LDS people who have found difficulty with the religion, just as I had. I may not agree with LDS doctrines, but i love LDS people. For me and many I know, difficulty in faith was caused by a wrong approptiation (that was a big word for me, I hope I used it correctly) of faith. I think that for many who were raised in a religious culture, it is easy to focus on religion and not the source or cause. I found Jesus outside of the LDS church, which I am thankful for, but I think many of the members here may have the same problem as I had. The importance is not if we stay LDS or not, my intent wouldn’t be to lead anyone away from the church, but to a saving faith in Jesus.

As far as my avatar, I am an avid motorcyclist and Triumph fan. The Trouble symbol is one that originated in the 60’s among racers. This symbol is very similar to the Triumph logo. Triumphs were somewhat unreliable for the racers. Today though, it means more, Triumph makes a street bike aimed to be a “hooligan” or Troublemaker. It was my bike of choice until I had to recently let it go so the wife could go to school. I’ve used the avatar on several motorcycle forums, it’s one of my favorites.

I was VERY blunt with him in the open thread – since I believe he is an anti-Mormon activist, and since I want to make it clear in the open that we won’t allow such stuff to be posted here. I gave him the chance to explain that he isn’t or leave.

I hope that approach is ok – and I will delete my comment if it isn’t.

It’s fair to be blunt and honest. The person sounds more like a Stage 3 swapper — trading away Mormonism for a new Stage 3-style faith in Bible-based, non-denominational Christianity.

I am totally happy for them if they found peace and joy. That *IS* a solution people could choose, BUT it isn’t what we are talking about at StayLDS. That doesn’t fit the mission objectives.

After a two comment PM exchange, I still am VERY wary. He stated very clearly that there is NO discussion of scripture on this site – that the only reference to scripture he finds is valoel’s tagline. I told him just as clearly, “Then you haven’t read much here.” I mentioned a couple of my posts and comments, and gave him the example of people who leave the Church and then, retroactively, claim it was because we never talk of Jesus and/or his mortal ministry. That’s hogwash – a result of hearing others say it and coming to believe it.

Anyway, I still see his purpose as trying to “share the Bible with the Mormons” – and we can’t let that happen if it continues.

If that is the direction this person heads, they are a LadyWisdom clone. Our site doesn’t need long copy-paste chunks of Bible quotes. We don’t have long discussions and debates about the Bible because that isn’t what concerns the people we are serving. They have a Bible, and I bet most have read it … perhaps multiple times. I have.

It’s like going on to a forum discussing advanced techniques in brain surgery, and wondering why there aren’t long quotes from high school chemistry and biology text books everywhere being discussed. It’s because all the surgeons know already, and they don’t need to talk about that particular thing all the time.
