There is a group that won the International Collegiate A Capella competition while they were students at BYU called “Vocal Point”. They are astounding. Some of their stuff is pop and instrumental simulation, but they also have some amazing versions of hymns.

If you want to get chills, the following are two of my favorites:

Nearer, My God, to Thee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZ5H3YmaVvI)

    Be Still, My Soul (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKGGUJoRvPs)

Please, share links to your favorite spiritual music – from whatever traditional.

    Thanks for that, Ray.

These guys are awesome too. Check out “Emma” and “Candles”.

I was at a stake conference many years ago and Hartman Rector Jr. was the keynote. He said something about music that i still remember (paraphrasing) “You’ll feel the spirit in this song. You see…all the good music has already been written on the other side. You don’t think Beethoven actually surprised the Lord with anything he wrote, do you? A composer or writer just “taps into” that from time to time. Unfortunately, all the bad music has already been written on the other side as well”

    Food for thought.

    Great idea Ray

Your BYU group is wonderful, thanks for the link, I haven’t got to yours yet Bruce but I will.

My suggestions comes from my secret past life of listening to Mormon Stories and Mormon Matters podcasts while working the fields in my tractor which used Clayton Pixton and his siblings as intro music. Go to this link and pick one of the songs, Come Come Ye Saints is wonderful:

    http://www.claytonpixton.com/hymnsanew.html

Be a bit patient with the download, it puts Quicktime into the little play box to the mid right of the screen and that takes a bit of time, well worth the wait.

Since I got to the site and have been meaning to look up the Pixton’s for some time I purchased the album and know that I won’t regret it. (Hmmm, if that sounds like I am promoting it, well, yessss, I guess I am 😳 ;) )

Oh, oh, oh, I was so hoping to get to do this!!! 😈

Okay, I’ve probably mentioned it several times but I’m way, way, way into the rock band, The Killers. And, as I mentioned in a different thread, the lead singer is LDS, though definitely some version of NOM rather than TBM. Link to his Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Flowers

He even named his first kid, Ammon.

His lyrics are full of spiritual and cultural mormon references, but you have to listen carefully. (it is rock, after all)

eg: “I spent two long years in a strange, strange land”

Anyways, I currently get goose bumps more frequently listening to the Killers than anything else, so… different strokes, huh?? 😳

Obviously, I can’t link to free music on the net, so some songs I love of theirs:

    “For Reasons Unknown”

    “Read My Mind”

    “Spaceman”

    “Sam’s Town”

    “Mr. Brightside”

    “Shadowplay”

    “Smile Like You Mean It”

I have noticed every once and a while that Mormon singers such as the ones you hear on Sundays are starting to sing songs from the more main stream christianity. Growing up I was told by my parents not to listen to that music because it could lead me astray, but I have been listening to contemporary christian music on KLOV for years and find the music uplifting. Now the Mormon artists are even using their worship songs on our programs.

What’s your opinion and thoughts about this? There is nothing wrong with their music, but do you see an evolution rising in the membership of our church? Are we finally becoming more open and accepting?

Thanks for bringing up this subject and sharing the great links. I have started listening to Christian music in the past couple of years and love Steven Curtis Chapman. This song (see link) has brought me a lot of peace when I have thought of those who have left this life earlier than expected.

This is not at all how

We thought it was supposed to be

We had so many plans for you

    We had so many dreams

    And now you’ve gone away

And left us with the memories of your smile

    And nothing we can say

    And nothing we can do

    Can take away the pain

The pain of losing you, but …

    We can cry with hope

We can say goodbye with hope

‘Cause we know our goodbye is not the end, oh no

And we can grieve with hope

    ‘Cause we believe with hope

    (There’s a place by God’s grace)

There’s a place where we’ll see your face again

    We’ll see your face again

    And never have I known

    Anything so hard to understand

And never have I questioned more

    The wisdom of God’s plan

But through the cloud of tears

I see the Father’s smile and say well done

    And I imagine you

Where you wanted most to be

Seeing all your dreams come true

    ‘Cause now you’re home

And now you’re free, and …

We have this hope as an anchor

    ‘Cause we believe that everything

God promised us is true, so …

So we can cry with hope

    And say goodbye with hope

    We wait with hope

    And we ache with hope

    We hold on with hope

    We let go with hope

I love threads like this. Thanks Old-Timer. I appreciate everyone’s links and sharing on this. I am apologize if foreign language isn’t useful here but I know it has been to me.
