GuestRecently a stake president in Los Angeles gave the OK for my Indian tribe to use their stake center cultural hall and kitchen for an entire Saturday. It is for our annual gathering when our Chief visits from Oklahoma. We needed a nice facility. We’re really appreciative of the offer (which apparently had Salt Lake’s approval/blessing). I’m on the association board. My youngest son once attended their stake and says the building/parking lot are beautiful. The location is perfect. My tribe is heavily Baptist and Methodist, and has been so for a hundred and fifty years (the pioneer churches among us). I suppose some will think of this as a PR project (as well it is). But I see diversity in it, it’s both benevolent and kind. One slight difference, food tables will not feature coffee pots this year (ha). Mvto! (thanks) to all who made this possible.
Oh yes, our chapels in California occasionally get used for holy Jewish holidays by small temples who need more seating. Our lack of crosses is probably a factor, but again, a very nice gift to the community.

GuestEnjoy and have a wonderful time. The Church has been very generous with the use of their facilities, sometimes for Emergency Shelter and other times for cultural events. Wonderful!!

GuestWe had sought other churches and community facilities. They always asked how much we were willing to pay. Native people are often poor. The LDS church asked only that we go with church standards (no smoking, etc.) and obtain a single-event insurance policy. One senior missionary couple will be on site. There was concern about our form of prayer (to the “Giver of Breath”), but it was resolved. We are not a drum beating tribe (well not at this sort of gathering) and feathers are not our thing. We do like to eat (hominy is big), so we identify with LDS in that regard. The only possible evil we’ll bring into the building, it is a tribal election year and candidates will lurk… September 27, 2009 at 1:05 pm #223613Anonymous
GuestThanks George That is a wonderful bit of sharing and I really appreciate it. We find here that we are often used for funerals when there are questionable circumstances (i.e. sucicide) and the families really appreciate that we don’t expect them to pay large fees for everything.
