SALT LAKE CITY — Despite heavy criticism and controversy, as well as an expensive lawsuit, one church refuses to back down from a controversial stand on homosexual marriage.

The following is a copy and paste from a Conference Report :

There can be no compromise when it comes to defending truth and right, according to President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hinckley is regarded as a modern prophet of God by more than 10 million members of the church worldwide.

Hinckley spoke to the 10 million members of the LDS Church worldwide via satellite as part of the 169th Semi-Annual General Conference just concluded this weekend. It was the last such conference ever to be held from the famous Tabernacle on Temple Square. A new Conference Center will be completed in time for the next such meeting in April 2000.

President Gordon B. Hinckley challenged his congregation to stand up for what is right.

“We regard it as not only our right, but our duty to oppose those forces which we feel undermine the moral fiber of society. Much of our effort, a very great deal of it, is in association with others whose interests are similar. We have worked with Jewish groups, Catholics, Muslims, Protestants, and those of no particular religious affiliation, in coalitions formed to advocate positions on vital moral issues,” Hinckley explained in his address.

“God-sanctioned marriage between a man and a woman has been the basis of civilization for thousands of years. There is no justification to redefine what marriage is,” he added.

    END OF COPY AND PASTE

I wanted to open a very controversial topic, perhaps too political and too controversial for this forum. What if one of the coalition members that Hinkley was referring to is actually an organized hate group? How do we keep these groups from infiltrating the LDS Church?

This isn’t necessarily too political or controversial for this group – but it is unanswerable, imo.

The answer is Love. Love is the strongest power in the universe. I believe that hate feeds off fear. We must learn to overcome our fear and to love with the pure love of Christ-unconditional love.

    Thanks so much to justme.

I have to admit that I am experiencing a loss right now. One of the groups who strongly opposed any and all rights for homosexual persons was a group of South American Immigrants. They were heavily involved in the production of false ID for illegal immigrants. They later became involved in “arranging for illegal immigrants to become legal”. The deal was that they would find a gay Mormon man who was willing to marry in illegal Brazilian Immigrant so that she could stay in the U.S. legally. This was run by a group of Mormon Converts. They promise the gay Mormon male that he will be able to receive all of the blessings of eternal marriage and celestial exaltation if he will marry an illegal Brazilian Mormon convert who is residing in the United States. They refer to the practice as “spotting”. Spotting means marrying the illegal immigrant so she can become legal. This group is extremely invested into making sure that Mormon homosexual males in Utah are never allowed to marry into same-sex unions because it would destroy their spotting activity.

The deal is that the illegal immigrant woman marries the man but NEVER consummates the marriage. This is exactly why they want only homosexual males. Again, the males are lured with the promise of eternal, celestial, heterosexual marriage if they marry these women. They may also be told that if they don’t marry these women, the group will “out” them as homosexuals and they will be excommunicated.

After the marriage, the women often leave the men (taking plenty of their money with them). Some of these women are actually already married and have families living in South America. I strongly oppose these groups but I am told that I must never oppose them because they are doing God’s work in working to outlaw same-sex marriage in Utah. I hate the fact that we have to be their allies and friends because we need their votes and support on capital hill.

I can understand your frustration with some of the tactics and motivations some groups have to deny marriage to same sex couples.

Do you have a list of what groups are in the coalitions against same sex marriage. I must admit that I do not know much about the coalition.

    Thanks, MisterCurie,

I wanted to post an example of Marriage Fraud so that people understand what it is. This was copied and pasted from a U.S. Immigration Site:

St. Paul, MN – Three Chinese citizens were recently convicted of a marriage fraud scheme, designed to help Chinese nationals obtain United States Green Cards and citizenship through marriage. The three men were convicted of aiding and abetting marriage fraud and conspiracy to commit marriage fraud by a federal jury in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mingwen Yang, Guangping Lin, and Yanxia Tang were found guilty of setting up a sham marriage scheme, in which U.S. citizens would be paid up to $25,000 for marrying Chinese citizens so that the Chinese nationals could attain United States immigration benefits. All three convicted face up to 10 years in prison. The fraudulent marriage scheme is believed to have operated from 2002 to 2007. There are a total of 40 other defendants involved, 21 of whom have already plead guilty to conspiracy charges. U.S. Attorney Frank Magill commented: “The goal of this conspiracy was for individuals to profit by assisting Chinese nationals in illegally obtaining visas and other immigration benefits. These convictions and plea agreements prove that the lies and deceit used by some to violate our nation’s immigration laws won’t be tolerated, and that we will maintain the integrity of our nation’s borders by prosecuting these types of crimes.”

Ok, we have our own version of the scheme here in Utah. I do not know at this time exactly how large this group actually is, but it could end up being even bigger than what happened in St. Paul if you count Southern Utah and Parts of Arizona.

This is a copy and paste:

The group came to the attention of authorities in 1999 after complaints from the Mexican consulate said it was selling identification cards for $200 to illegal residents that ask the Immigration and Naturalization Service not to deport them. The money also allowed them to place their pictures in a book that was given to politicians in Washington, D.C., to explain the plight of illegal immigrants whose children are citizens.

The consulate and state residents complained to the Idaho and Utah state commissions on Hispanic Affairs.

This group is called, “America Forever” and it means that one can stay in America forever. The ads run by America Forever in the Salt Lake Tribune to combat the Common Ground Initiative are very offensive and cannot be posted here. They are a real political fire hot potato. All I have asked is that the Church disassociate itself from this group completely and “Forever”.

I am feeling that I was a little harsh on Sister Rodrigues.

    From the Deseret News

Rodrigues, a native of Brazil, helps shepherd a group of approximately 150 children born in America to undocumented parents. She said she has a special feel for their anxieties.

“I came here in 1973. It took me 19 years to get my green card,” she said. “It can be a tremendous frustration dealing with the INS. You can call immigration three times and get three answers. It’s not an easy thing.

The Brazilian women are LDS converts who have now married men that they will never have a normal relationship with just so they could stay in the U.S. I posted the link above to be far to Rodrigues so that others could see things in her prospective, not mine.
