2 ginormous ideas/requests for you gals/guys to consider:

    1) I think we should consider to start blogging….like at least 4 or 5 times a week. I think that we can do this super easily if we simply recycle good posts or comments we’ve written over the past year. Also, we should not hesitate to copy/paste both questions and answers to our blog posts, sort of in a “Dear Abby” style. I just think that it will reach the blogging folks who don’t feel comfortable in Forums. It would also let us be searchable through Google, it will allow folks to add us to their RSS aggregators, and it will allow us to put up a StayLDS page w/ Kindle, which could be cool.

    2) Most importantly, I would love us to start assembling/aggregating/tagging our “best of” posts, comments, content into some sort of directory that folks can use to look up issues and topics in a more easily searchable way. Doing #1 above (if we tag/categorize our blog posts) will be an easy, slow, reliable way to do that.

I think that doing these 2 things will also help us cull the content we could use to write a book or two….via content already written (vs. completely generating new prose).

If ya’ll are open, interested, please let me know — and I’ll try to set a system up. My biggest motivator is that I don’t want all the sage wisdom and cool topics we’ve imparted over the past year to just die in the archives. That is great stuff that a newbie should be able to immediately leverage (vs. having the same old conversations over and over again).

I love the idea – will the blog be the front page with the forum as a link and vice-versa? I have done a lot of blog posts on MM directly from content here, as have others. I am excited about the Kindle possibility – if so, we should shoot for a post per day to make it worth people’s while. Perhaps we can also recycle some posts to the front now and again as these topics are cyclical. Will it be a free Kindle publication or 99 cents / month? Will the blog posts be authored individually by admins here or just done under a general admin with just a recap of existing content, not new content? Will there be comments allowed on the blog posts (open comments) or just show some of the discussion that was already had on the forum?

    A few quick responses….

    1) I was thinking that the blog would be the front page, but I’m open to any ideas.

    2) I agree w/ the post per day. Does the Kindle let you comment to blog posts?

    3) I totally agree — recycle, recycle, recycle

    4) I didn’t see a “free” vs. “.99” option when I enrolled MM w/ the Kindle…so I’m assuming they charge no matter what? I’m open…I just don’t know the answer. If folks are willing to pay, it would be nice to generate some $$$…this stuff costs me quite a bit of $$$ each year if you add it all up. This is more of a big deal now that I make $12,000 for the next 5 years. :) (cue violins playing in the background…..)

    5) I would prefer each of us to develop personas on the blog if ya’ll are open to that (real names or abbreviations of real names if possible…but not required)….but that would only be my preference. I just think that making things personal always wins in the Web 2.0 world. Also, just like people being thrown in jail and marching was critical to the success of the civil rights movement, I think the more people that “come out” by name as non-orthodox or non-orthoprax…..will only help (in very tangible and meaningful ways) to create more space, tolerance and empathy for non-traditional LDS. My personal goal is probably a Reform Mormonism movement that happens within the LDS church…that simultaneously seeks to validate and empower orthodoxy as well (recognizing both as necessary ends of a spectrum).

    6) I would allow comments on the blog post…..that’s just my preference.

    Again…I’m open to any/all thoughts.

    John –

1 – that would be my thought too

2 – I need to check on the Kindle this evening to verify that it allows commenting via the Kindle

    3 – perfect

4 – I agree about doing the 99 cent thing – some blogs (in Amazon’s Kindle store) are listed as free, but I’m not subscribing to them because I assume they are crap. It’s like the old thinking that selling someone a BOM for the publishing cost ($2) made them value it more. Even though I generally think that the “word of God” should be free – but the words of Hawkgrrrl can totally be bought!

5 – I’ve got my Hawkgrrrl persona that’s pretty consistent and established everywhere, and I’m very open about my blogging in my ward, but due to my high profile job I’m not willing to be connected to my blogging using my real name. And you’re scaring me when you talk about Reform Mormonism. My party line is that the majority of people who’ve given it a moment’s thought and are totally honest with themselves are going to be non-orthodox, so there’s nothing wrong with it. But I’m not chanting “Hell no, we won’t go!” and storming Church HQ over it. Just sayin’.

    6 – I too would prefer that.

    :)

Don’t be scared. I think we’re on the same page. I was just feeling edgy for a moment…though I do want to create more tolerance/empathy for those who struggle…mostly to help decrease the divorce, ostratization (sp?), alienation and unnecessary pain that accompanies disaffection. But I’m pro church, and anti-storming. :)

I love the concept – but we have to be VERY careful of the wording we use. I won’t be involved in ANYTHING that sounds like we are trying to reform the Church or challenge the Brethren in any way. Individual reconciliation, absolutely; organizational reform, absolutely not.

I’m a bit nervous about coming completely out of the closet. I had a conversation with Tom Kimball yesterday about church archives, and it made me a bit paranoid. He said the church kept 3 x 5 cards on all the people who looked at controversial stuff when the archives were open in the 80’s, and then exe-d them all. Church archives are once again more open than they’ve ever been, and I fear a repeat. Maybe I shouldn’t fear, but I have to tell you that I live in extremely conservative Utah County, and there doesn’t seem to be much openness to heterdox ideas here. That’s why I prefer a bit of anonymity, though I’m sure people could find me out if they really tried hard enough. I’m banking on a modicum of privacy with my moniker.
