GuestDoes this bug anyone else? It bugs me, and I can’t put my finger on why. IMO, GC would be just as good the next weekend. I posed this question on another board, and was met with “I can see why they wouldn’t push it back just for Easter, since conference is always the first weekend in April, and Easter is never the same day..” Just for Easter? Isn’t Easter the most important day in all of Christianity? And aren’t we Christians, after all? And then the answer was about how there is no better way to spend Easter than listening to the GA’s. And I guess I get that. But I’m still bugged. March 3, 2010 at 7:09 pm #228119Anonymous
GuestYeah. I can see your point. I’m not sure that there’s anything to be done about it other than maybe go to another church’s service if you need to. What do you think you would like to do about it for yourself? March 3, 2010 at 8:22 pm #228120Anonymous
GuestI can get bugged by listening to GA’s on any day of the year. Not always. I can see how this is not the way you would choose to spend your easter. The GA’s will likely do what they want and not explain why. I think you could just start thinking about how you want to spend easter and do that. Does it really matter how the GA’s spend their easter, can’t you make it the day you want regardless of what any one else is doing?

GuestI like it. It allows the vast majority of teachers, leaders, etc to have Easter weekend OFF from teaching, conducting and having MEETINGS. People can even choose to spend the entire weekend with family and then watch GC in sessions during the week.
I think if our Sunday meetings were set up differently–like one hour of singing and praise and the sacrament, then go home–I would agree with you.

GuestMormons do a crap job with Easter anyway. In your average ward, maybe you would get a couple of talks about Christ’s last week, crucifixion and resurrection and a couple of hymns with Easter themes. From my experience, SS is almost never focused on Easter because they have to follow the schedule and it’s mostly the same for RS/Priesthood though there tends to be more leeway there. I often go to other churches for Easter. I’d rather have GC because that means sleeping in on the east coast. The Church could change it’s GC schedule to accommodate for Easter, but unless it changes the regular mormon Sunday worship services for Easter, it’s not going to happen.

GuestI don’t see how we can stay LDS until we get beyond grumbling. I feel like part of my staying LDS is being plugged into the religion. So I kind of want to catch conference. Besides, I find I pretty much enjoy it as I used to, the occasional Brother Holland Book of Mormon talk notwithstanding.
On the other hand, maybe I was TOO plugged into the religion before, and a little less connectedness would be healthy, even with the full intent to engage the community as a positive contributor.
As for what to do about Easter, I just don’t know, and I feel for Convert. To me it’s no longer a huge issue, though I love the pageants, cantatas, and hymns.

I agree, and I think this is part of my issue.
Most of the time, I love Conference. But I think Easter should be recognized better. And I was just really put off by all of the “Who cares about Easter” type of comments I’ve received.
I like conference, and I like Easter. I don’t want them to have to share my time I guess. LOL.
I like the suggestion of going to another church, but I highly doubt that would fly with my husband.
Thanks for reading my rambles.

GuestThe question at hand isn’t really about the correct way to spend our Easter day, or what the Church planned. The real question for our community is: How will I enjoy my decision? Do the thing that creates the right meaning for us this Easter. Make the decision and own the decision. In religious language, follow the Spirit of God. What a great idea on such an important ceremonial day!
Watch Conference
Go to another church
Spend the day relaxing and enjoying family
Spend the day alone contemplating Easter
Do nothing and contemplate the absence of Easter this year in your life
etc.
etc.
All great choices! Mix and match to make your own Easter salad.

GuestI grew up Protestant, so the first time I experienced a GC on Easter was shocking to me, a big disappointment. If you are in a faith community where Christ is elevated each week, then the top of the mountain (so to speak), has to be the Resurrection. The music, flowers, talks, children’s outfits, all combine for the highlight service of the year. I will attend elsewhere this season, perhaps a sunrise service. In the afternoon my family will gather at the park for a Easter dinner and (horror of horrors), family baseball game. Yes, even my TBM children will participate. Call it holy baseball, we have done it for the last several years and the grandchildren love it… March 4, 2010 at 12:19 am #228127Anonymous

“Who cares about ________?”
That can be a hurtful question or remark about anything. The fact is you care. It is difficult when people try to minimize that.
I adore Brian’s comments.

GuestI really liked the Easter program in my other church growing up. The LDS church not so much. Maybe it is better for them to just do GC on Easter until they eventually figure out a better way to celebrate and respect Easter, I mean for the “holiday” that it is or w/e. Maybe the people that run the show can plan ahead..for example “Oh look Easter is on this day..lets make a special lesson for each class!” Personally I’d rather go to church on Easter Sunday and be able to follow a organized program completely dedicated to Easter related subjects than watching GC..but something like that in our church seems currently kind of impossible with all of the strict guidelines. GC on Easter beats out Easter LDS church meetings..hands down. March 7, 2010 at 8:22 am #228129Anonymous
GuestMaybe the key is thinking of Easter as a season, not as an event that needs to occur on one day. Most wards will have Easter themes, Easter musical numbers by the choir, and Easter-related talks EVEN IF General Conference falls on Easter Sunday. We do the same during Christmas season, even if Christmas falls on a day other than Sunday. Another thing, I always wondered why some people feel they need to be Christmasized or Easterized, or otherwise entertained on those particular days. Maybe some of this comes from the Protestant and Catholic cultures of having giant events on those days when lots of people decide to come to church. In the Mormon church, the difference in attendance is not NEAR as great for those days. In some churches, Easter is like “Black Friday” when businesses finally get out of the red. Call it their “Black Sunday”. They danged sure better put on a show! In the Mormon church, however, it’s kind of like another day at the chapel, and we talk about Christ and teach of Christ just like we ordinarily do. This isn’t a Sunday that’s going to make or break our budget.
I’m not saying we still can’t go out of our way to make these meetings a little more special and recognize, with our Christian cousins, the magnificent events these holidays represent.
