So, my daughter comes to me. She says, “I received inspiration recently”.

I asked how. She told me she was sitting in church during a young women ‘s song and presentation (I guess this was in YW’s). She said,

    Quote:

“I had this feeling come over me that GOD LOVES ME EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT FOLLOWING CHURCH POLICY BY ATTENDING A WARD IN WHICH I DO NOT LIVE”.

When she said it, one of those spiritual experiences happened. Our eyes locked, and the room got thick with that spiritual feeling I have come to associate with the Holy Ghost.

I asked how she knew it was inspiration and not just her own thoughts. She replied

    Quote:

    “Overwhelming peace”.

I replied “Welcome….”. She knew what I meant — that she had stepped into a spiritual place I too exist.

She knew what I meant. We have the same version of “testimony” and have experienced it many times together. It’s strange, the spiritual experiences we have together tend to be on matters of unorthodox beliefs. At another time, the same thing happened when I told her never to let the church get you so busy you deny your spiritual or mental health or your personal peace. It was the same kind of experience this time.

I sure hope there is some design in this — perhaps she has inherited my tendencies for overcommitment and high expectations of others and myself. And my role is to temper that so she can be truly amazing some day. Who knows. But I thought I would share.

I also want to share that others know the Spirit is alive and well in families that are also unorthodox…and that TBM mormons and unorthodox people like myself can co-exist in the same household….[so far…!].

What Roy said. You are blessed.

Thank you for sharing this with us. The daily grind can be taxing, but the moments of brilliance make it all worth it. I hope everyone can experience something, whatever its form, that approximates this experience.

I’m glad you shared and I’m glad we have a place to share things like this. I can see this experience being scoffed at in some circles. After all, how can someone not following the rules possibly even have a spiritual experience, much less a confirmation that something they’re doing wrong could be right.

It’s good to see the children have experiences, and how it is not so tied to church boundaries.

As the old saying goes, Popularity comes from pleasing people, greatness comes from pleasing God.

People in the church approve when rules are followed and it fits the model. But we can teach our kids that God is not bound by those rules. He can be found outside the church in many places in the world. Therefore, the church rules have their place and purpose, but we don’t need to limit God’s influence in our life, but celebrate it where ever we find it.

    Thanks for sharing SD.

SD – Thank you. I am so happy for both of you. In my life it is the very experiences this post addresses that keeps me from letting go completely. I know everyone doesn’t have these. Some people never, but that doesn’t diminish mine – nor should I diminish their experiences and the faith they build on it, even if it means they become or feel athiest. I don’t know how all of our spiritual experiences work – but I am so happy that you and your daughter shared one today.
