I attended the Nazarene church worship service today. The elders of their church annointed an older woman with oil who had been suffering with pain for weeks now. As the elders did that and started praying for her, one by one almost the entire congregation got up and surrounded this woman and the elders with arms around each other in support of her healing. It was so spiritual and beautiful to witness as this was a large congregation. They also allow for testimony bearing of all ages. A 12 year old boy got up and expressed how he had been so mean to his siblings and not dealing with life well, but because of the out pouring of love to him from so many of the members he realized what being Christlike is all about. He said he is repenting and treating his family better now and wants to be a better person.

There is a great deal of unselfishness and of sacrificing of their time, means, and energy in their callings and volunteer work. The enthusiasm for being true followers of Christ is heart warming to see. This shows me how important the first principle of the gospel (having faith in Christ) alone has such power. So, I have a question for you all, “What is the most beautiful thing you have ever experienced in the lds church?”

The most beautiful thing I experienced in the LDS Church was probably the missionary lessons I taught when the Spirit was overpowering.

I don’t know that this is the “most beautiful” thing I have ever witnessed, but I was extremely touched and humbled a few months ago as I waited to meet with the Bishop. There were many people who needed to talk with the Bishop/transact various items of business, and as I sat there and watched them come and go I observed a young mother with 4 young children and a stack of bills. She wasn’t a member of our ward and as I started talking with her I came to learn that she was from Bosnia and lived in a different part of our city. Because I had to wait for awhile for the Bishop I was able to witness everything that happened…she met briefly with the Bishop and checks were quietly processed for the stack of utility bills she had in her hand. All of this happened lovingly, quietly, and without anyone really seeing (except for me because I happened to be there for the entire time). I remember feeling like “this is what is all about” and felt incredibly blessed to have witnessed the exchange.

The day I was attending the temple in Atlanta and the Lord reached through the veil – and his hand was black. That was many years ago, but I will never forget it.
