Even though Be Thou an Example was written in 1981, I still saw it as a valid expression of faith by the late Church President Gordon B. Hinckley. I saw it pretty much as a precursor to his recent work Standing For Something. I liked it much better because of its focus on faith. The two best chapters (in my opinion) are “Be not Faithless,” and the last chapter entitled “Marriage that Endures.” I have read President Hinkley’s Faith, the Essence of Pure Religion, and thought that it was okay. I always thought President Hinckley was a better spokesperson for the church with the media (Mike Wallace 60 minutes for example) and on the Latter-day saint life than writing doctrinal treatises. By far Be Thou an Example is much better in promoting a healthy Latter-day saint approach to life and living the gospel. It was neat to read the book after hearing many of President Hinkley’s talks and responses to questions over the years. Hinckley’s Be Thou an Example discusses many of the similar snippets that I recall hearing him speak about throughout his life. Perhaps, Be Thou an Example set the tone for President Hinckley’ tenure as a long standing member of the First Presidency and President of the Church. I would recommend finding a copy and reading it. Perhaps I enjoyed it because I could picture President Hinckley and hear his voice as I read it. What a wonderful man, what a wonderful Prophet. President Hinckley is a big reason why I have stayed LDS.

I need to check out this book, especially for the two chapters you said were best, on faithlessness and marriage.

    Thanks for the book review.
