I have to say, I’m nervous even writing this. I don’t think he is my bishop, but it is a strange bit of timing. My bishop has been more interested in talking to me lately about the faith crisis phenomenon, and has read “Shaken Faith Syndrome” as well as some other Ex-Mo experiences. He has very recently said he has become less literal and more charitable, and has dealt with some cog-dis. I wouldn’t have thought he would categorize his experience as a “faith crisis” though, I would guess more of a transformation like a Bushman or Ray. I was still guessing that he holds onto some distinctive TBM ideas.

Anyway, just wanted to say. This timing is kind of freaking me out, and there is no way I want to try to find out. I would be a little sad in some way.

Edit: He was also talking to me about inoculation – and how he does not want his kids to grow up with a naieve or simplistic faith that would put them at risk. I don’t know. I also read stealthbishop’s into at NOM and found additional parallels with science and quantum theory specifically. Kind of amazing coincidence of timing and similarities. I feel like I want to avoid knowing though. Why is that?

Does he know of your involvement here?

If so, yeah, freaky. If not, COOL!! 8-)

He would not know of my involvement here unless he picked up something from what my wife said. (She is real good friends with his wife)

Read this review he wrote and it doesn’t sound like the same person as stealthbishop:

but like I said, the timing and some of the similarities are striking.

Edit: I also saw in his NOM thread that he dismissed Pr/RS, or I assume the last hour of the block on Mothers Day. We were out of town that week, but I don’t think that happened in our ward – so I don’t think it’s him. Of course there is always a possibility of paranoia and planting misleading information, but I think we’d all agree that’s a stretch.

I just wonder if it is a trend we are likely to see more and more in the church, even leadership. Information is available to give some credit to the claims that non- or even anti-Mormon claims, so people who might have just dismissed claims in the past must really face these things seriously.

It is an interesting coincidence for you, Orson. Even if it isn’t the same individual, it could be very well the same line of thinking. I bet you can learn from him in a unique way.

Way to go Orson, you’ve destroyed the faith of your bishop. That’s my conclusion ;) ;) 😆 😆

Seriously though, that is a little freaky. I already know my bishop believes in inoculating his kids as he has discussed it with me. I don’t know if he discusses that with everyone, but since we carpool sometimes we’ve had some interesting discussions. When he found out I knew a thing or two about church history he opened up quite a bit.

I’m glad to see some people in high profile callings having such faith crises. Not because I want them to suffer as I have, but because it makes the problem more real and much harder to easily dismiss. Hopefully the folks in downtown SLC will start to take notice and we’ll have some progress in helping those in such a situation.

I thought I’d post an update, I just listened to the Mormon Expression podcast with StealthBishop. I started out thinking “oh yea, this sounds nothing like my bishop, no way its him” — but on NOM he did post that they disguised the pitch AND cadence of his voice, so maybe the technology surpasses my expectations. Then a couple of additional coincidences came out. I realize there are probably a great number of Lord of the Rings fans that graduated from BYU and currently serve as a Bishop with a fascination for the faith crisis phenomenon, but the timing is really something. At the end of the podcast a laugh really sounded like it could be him, so now I’m kind of puzzled again. But he stated some positions that I can’t imagine my bishop having – though we haven’t discussed any related topic in well over a year.

Maybe someday I’ll send him a note and find out.

Maybe that’s what I’m afraid of.
