Oh man, had the stake conference today (and yesterday, but I skipped that part) – one and a half good speakers. Interestingly, the former was a foreigner and was at the end of the conference, and the latter a woman, although she pinched a lot of her sermon out of the Ensign.

Caught myself yawning several times (which I’m ashamed of), and was completely lost in the sea of faces. Didn’t feel the spirit I’m afraid, except maybe in the final talk. The MC is unfortunately a dull speaker, and his talk was riddled with cliches – “run the extra mile”, “a hundred and ten percent” etc – and repetitions. He talked about non-members becoming “zombies” due to the dullness of outside life, but to be honest, I felt I was being zombified by the conference.

They mentioned bringing along an investigator, but to be honest, how would an investigator deal with a boring conference?

I wrote a bit of a story in the conference, pretending I’m taking notes.

One other bonus, we sang How Firm a Foundation, which I like.

I managed to “endure to the end”, but only just. Have my TR interview coming up, and will hopefully pass it, but this kind of thing is trying. I’m looking forward to a more exciting “regular” Sunday next week.

p.s. We really need a “boredom” bit on the site. Boredom is as big a problem as disaffection and hate, just a more complicated one to address

I dealt with it by taking my family on a vacation for the week end. Totally skipped Stake Conference in its entirety. We had fun as a family. We’ve decided we don’t expect our kids to attend Stake Conference until they get to be a certain age. As long as we have a young child at home, one of the parents gets to stay at home with that child. The other parent takes the older kids to the conference.

My TBM DW and I do the same thing. The funny thing is it was originally her idea to make SC weekend a vacation. Now that our kids are of a certain age (all are baptized, and my oldest son is now a deacon), they’re probably old enough to sit still for two hours…or not. At any rate, my wife isn’t pushing for a change, and I’m more than happy to remain oblivious. :D

The hard part will be when we have to take away the vacation and make them go to church instead. Maybe I should be sentencing everyone to hard labor on SC weekend so it’s a better situation to be at Church when they hit the age when SC is mandatory…:)

I’d half a mind to take a week off. Actually I was going to drag a Catholic friend of mine to his church, but decided to attend the LDS SC. I think he’s in need of a bit of church just now, but fortunately he went, and I think he enjoyed it.
