I have recently come to understand that the church has stopped teaching the Pearl of Great Price in seminary. What are list members experiences with this? Is it true? What does that say about the belief in the PoGP as a standard work of the gospel? Is it yet another attempt to distance the church from un wanted beliefs/practices? I find this very interesting as a reflection of the church’s attempt to change, yet again, its image, which doesn’t seem consistent with being the restored church of Christ on earth. Just curious what list members think or have experienced.

    Thanks, Curt

I don’t know. This is the first I heard of it. The PoGP isn’t very long, so it’s not like they can make a whole year of study about it. I thought they usually lumped it in with the D&C year. The cycle was always like this:

    -Old Testament

    -New Testament

    -Book of Mormon

-D&C + Pearl of Great Price

Do you have a link to something that talks about it?

I think Brian is right, PoGP was covered the same year as D&C. My oldest daughter is in Seminary and this year is D&C/Church History.

Well, I have a friend who teaches seminary and he said it as the last poster did, that it is D&C/church history. Is church history analogous to the PofGP because it includes the official account of the first vision? I would still love to hear from others about this.

This year we covered the Moses and Abraham sections of the PoGP as part of our study on the Old Testament in Gospel Doctrine. We covered them early on in the year so I can’t remember exactly what was covered, but it seemed like the GD teacher skipped lightly over Abraham and delved further into Moses. I don’t know if the manual suggested covering the BoA quickly or this teacher decided to do it that way for whatever reason. All I know is that as time goes by, the BoA has seemed to diminish in importance. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a deep discussion on Kolob in Sunday School. Also, I noticed that Preach My Gospel omits all of the BoA references that were part of the old missionary discussions. So I’d say, yes, the church is slowly distancing itself from some uncomfortable doctrines/source material. And I actually think that’s a good thing. If anything makes us look like Scientologists, it’s Kolob and other wacky cosmologies.

It’s studied in Seminary along with the Old Testament, as well.
