The new CHI is has come out and takes effect on November 13th. Here is an excerpt from a letter I received from a close friend who is a bishop out in Canada.

“I’m not the most conservative bishop like you would have out there likely. But the church is changing. There is a new manual of instruction coming out on Nov 13th, but I already have it. It has changed more towards leniency with church discipline. Good to see.”

I had heard that part of the reason was that the percentage of excommunicants that return is extremely low. Evidently the same thing has happened with missionary transgressions. They’ve eased up on excommunications because of the numbers that never come back.

I think the general consensus is that excommunications are way down.

As an interesting side note about exing: the sister to my BIL was just re-baptized after having been excommunicated many, many years ago. She wasn’t active when she was ex’d so doing so was really pointless as she’d not had anything to do with the church except baptism. She now thinks everyone should be ex’d so they can be re-baptized. She a real fan of excommunication now. 😆 Another brother is becoming active in the church and she thinks for sure he needs ex’d first!

I have the new CHI at my house and the comment my husband made about it: It’s thinner.

This coming “fifth” Sunday, the topic of discussion will be the CHI. We are to come with any questions we have. I find it strange that they are having this topic now before the official release but maybe they will use the new one to answer our questions. Anyone have any suggestions for questions I should put forward? I’m a little afraid that I will out myself with my questions. I do want to get some straight answers about what “raising the bar” really means pertaining to missionaries. How many months for porn, time for word of wisdom problems etc? Is it true that if you have pre-marital sex you will never be allowed on a mission. Stuff like that. Send your questions along and I’ll do my best to get them answered. ;) 🙄

The main question I have is what are the major changes from the previous version? That would be interesting to see the differences to get an idea of what they are trying to do.

The worldwide training in November is about the new CHI. The CHI isn’t supposed to be distributed to everyone until after that training – thus ensuring that it will be distributed prior to the training in many areas. :P

All I have heard so far is that it is MUCH thinner – which I love.

I think it’s great if the new CHI modifies the church discipline process. After sitting in some of those councils, I didn’t really like it very much.

Regarding the question whether or not premarital sex can keep one from serving a mission. The answer, based on what I can remember from the previous CHI was no. The only thing sex-related that could keep one from serving would be sex with multiple partners or having a child, based on what I can remember.
