GuestI noticed that 2 of our most recent posters are more traditional / mainstream people, not “crisis of faith” types – just people struggling to stay in the church because it’s hard sometimes or one feels discouraged or isn’t following the teachings. I think it’s important we be able to deal with these guys where they are, not introducing the “crisis of faith” stuff into the discussion unnecessarily – although they will see those discussions on the site. Otherwise, it seems we won’t be helping them to “Stay LDS” but introducing new justifications for them to NOT “Stay LDS.” Anyone disagree?

GuestI agree completely. A huge aspect to the culture and tone of this community is how we as moderators and admins shape the discussions with our own comments. Not only do we shape it with our perspectives, but there is also a small element of “authority” to our words based on be official staff for the site. I try to always keep that in mind. We do a great job at it already, but let’s keep this even more in the front of our minds and hearts as we see these new people interact in the discussions. Of course we should individually be authentic and honest with what we write. I admire everyone here and their own “reconciliation” paths. Sometimes, just writing something to acknowledge and validate less common viewpoints is enough to tip the scales of a discussion though, even if we don’t personally take that same direction.

GuestAbsolutely. I’ll try to pay attention to those type of posts. Elder Wirthlin identified THREE types of people who leave the Church – and he included the tired and those who “sin”, not just the different. There are other types, but the issues these posters describe are legitimate, even if they aren’t why most of the people here struggle.
