GuestJust a fun question that caused me a lot of trouble within the YSA in my country (since we only have 4 stakes, they all know me as one of those feminist women who just don’t agree with it all). So, would you stay LDS if the church re-instated poligamy?

GuestYes, if it simply was “allowed”, but I wouldn’t participate – both personally and because my first wife wouldn’t give permission. It’s hard to be a polygamist if your wife leaves you. Just sayin’.
There are plenty of situations in the world right now where allowing polygamy would help missionary work (like in many parts of Africa and among many Muslims), and it actually is a much more “honest” idea than the type of serial adultery that happens with so many people – especially when it isn’t practiced in the abusive and controlling ways that are present in some groups.
Bruce, would this pose a problem for you?

GuestIt would depend on what my wife thought. If there was not requirement they stay home and bear children, the third income would be nice (I jest). You know the purpose would be to raise up seed… April 3, 2011 at 8:28 pm #241942Anonymous
GuestNo. Well, maybe. I guess I might consider staying if they allowed and sanctioned same sex marriage at the same time.

GuestEven though I’m too old to even consider practicing the principle, I envision a time when it will be reinstated for all saints. The plural families that I am familiar with are, many times, happier and more well-adjusted than monogamous families. (not all..of course, but more than outsiders think) It’s either an eternal principle…or it’s not. Not a lot of gray area there IMHO.
I totally agree with SilentDawning though…it would absolutely depend on what my wife, and other affected family members thought.

GuestI don’t think it would make much difference for me personally. Either way, I’m “non-correlated”. April 3, 2011 at 10:24 pm #241945Anonymous

Hmmmm? Well, I don’t share your opinion, but carry on. I can’t see how that is possible, knowing what we know of how much damage it does to many of the women who are involved in it. If polygamy is an eternal principle and that is what waits for us in the mormon CK — I don’t want any part of heaven. I’ll just quietly resign the fact that I’m going to be an “administrating angel” in the terrestrial kingdom.

GuestIt depends. I don’t like the way JS and other church leaders talked about polygamy and did. The coerision of young girls. Taking married mens wives. Lying behind Emma’s back. Everything would have to be concentual and done in an honest and loving way (which I don’t know is possible.) Plus, they would have to allow polyandry as well. My husband has been impotent for years and just has never had much interest in sex. It would have been nice to have had a second husband at times. April 4, 2011 at 12:33 am #241947Anonymous

nice BN! Didn’t we learn the lesson the first time? I’m with cwald in his kingdom. Besides, to go to the Celestial Kingdom one must participate in plural marriage? Or was that prophet “speaking out of turn?”
[This is Ray. I corrected the spelling of “prophet”, but I am adding this note so that Tom’s comment that follows makes sense.

Guest“profit”? Careful. This is staylds.com, not recovery from Mormonism. April 4, 2011 at 2:16 am #241949Anonymous

I’m sorry, I am the worst speller in the world! It’s off the topic, but what is recovery from Mormonism?
Ray is there a fee for the spell check? cash, check, credit, or paypall?

GuestIf they gave the same excuse that they used before, greater posterity, greater glory, then no. If they allowed it so that cultures that still practice polygamy wouldn’t have to abandon wives and destroy families, then OK, I’d stay. April 4, 2011 at 3:33 am #241952Anonymous
GuestNot sure it would matter to me. I am still just of the opinion it is mostly made up so this would be just one more made up doctrine. April 4, 2011 at 4:19 am #241953Anonymous
GuestSimple answer, no. I have no interest in church-sanctioned adultery. -
