Has anyone ever done this or think that it really works. I have been tempted to do this., which is really bizarre. I have had events happen to me in life and I guess I get superstitious about weird things. Once I found the King of Hearts face card on the ground, and then I realized that I was falling in love with a girl and I ended up marrying her (my first wife).

Often I see ironies associated with symbols in life. One time I was so angry I couldn’t stay in my own house so I found myself at a motel called EL Toro (the bull). I am a Taurus and I had bit of a problem with anger, so the irony was really thick.

In the month of March I found a playing card by my automobile as I was leaving my job. This time it was the King of Spades. A week later I was let go from my job, from my boss.

Recently I had an idea do playing cards correlate to tarot cards or can they be used as such, and I googled it and found it. Now that I am going through another period of uncertainty my curiosity is getting the worst of me. As a teacher I used playing cards to teach kids how to count and play the game “war” so they could realize what sums are higher. Cards are great for sorting suites and arranging things in numerical order. However, now with more time on my hands my curiosity is getting the better of me. Is this part of the dark arts? I’ve heard people losing membership over such things as this. Has anyone ever participated in such a thing? Or is it a bunch of hogwash. I wouldn’t ever play with a Ouija board, I have heard too many bad stories, but I have always been curious of the unexplained. However, I am not a young kid. I have the Priesthood and believe in that, so I wouldn’t want anything to tarnish or damage that. To tell the truth I didn’t even think I would ever be tempted with something like this.

I can imagine that only if they took it to an extreme – and it would have to be a pretty clear extreme.

I have no faith whatsoever in tarot cards. Like horoscopes, the general assertions of tarot card readings (and the instances you mentioned in your post) are generic enough (and generally have no specified dates attached) that anything that happens can be seen as fulfilling the predictions. (I like and believe in the principle and concept of Patriarchal Blessings, but the description above can be applied to PB’s, as well.)

I do believe there are people who have the gift of . . . insight (for lack of a better word) – and I do believe that we project auras that can be “understood” (broadly speaking about moods and emotions) by those who are skilled at reading people – so I am open to the idea that people can “read” other people and use cards or some other medium in the process of doing do. I just don’t believe in the concept of tarot cards – or any other specific “channel”, if you will.

I think the whole angst over cards in general is a by-product of one of the prophets (was it Pres. Kimball?) who accepted the traditional interpretation of the symbolism of the individual cards and actively preached against them (another case of hyper-sensitivity to things that “might” affect someone, imo – which is a whole different discussion) – but I love all kinds of classic card games and have no problem with them at all.

I opened a fortune cookie last week at a work lunch, and it said “focus and finish that project” andi totally liked that one. I pinned it up above my computer at work. It inspired me.

I was also sent to Oakland California on my mission. I connected with some great people. One dude said he knew God sent me specifically to that area to find, teach and baptize him. We found meaning in that.

Now I know how the church issues mission calls. It is about the same as how fortune cookies are sent out.

Do I think a power in the universe is directing these things? No. But just because something is random, doesn’t mean it is necessarily meaningless to everyone, but I mostly fall in the camp of thinking they are not necessarily meaningful. Just my thought.

I’ve always been interested in them, and own a set.

However, I don’t like using them, since they verge too much on the occult, and clash with my current belief system. The artwork on them is interesting… and I consider them a springboard for inspiration, but no, I don’t use them these days.

In my experience though, most tarot card readers do cold reading, and don’t tell you much at all. (Paid or unpaid).

I think tools like Tarot cards can act as a conduit to poke around in your unconscious mind, which is many ways is more complex and powerful than our conscious mind. I don’t think any of these things are supernaturally evil. To me, the story you tell of associating seeing cards with events in your life is very interesting, especially that you make those connections. I don’t think poker cards caused those events. It’s telling that you look for those patterns though. That is interesting to explore.

I had a VERY disturbing experience as a teenager with a Ouija board. Whatever that thing taps into, it is too much and it isn’t good. It seems that people who are sensitive or intuitive often get a bad sense from Ouija boards and stay away from them. I hate to sound all hokey and call them dangerous, but yeah. I’ll just say it: I think they tap into something unhealthy (spiritually or psychologically, your choice).

I have a strong aversion to depending on other people’s intuitive impulses. I just have this sense that you can’t trust most people. I am not saying that to be paranoid. It’s just plain common sense to me. People are influenced by their own vibe and view of the world. Their impressions are going to be colored by their beliefs and motivations.

I suppose if you could find someone who is really spiritual and mature to read Tarot cards, or read your fortune, but there’s just this sense that I am giving up my freedom and responsibility by not seeking my own inspiration. Although I suppose having someone as a sounding board or mentor is common practice (the role of a guru). I am even more suspicious of anyone who charges money or makes a living from such activities. There’s way too much other motivation mixed into that kind of relationship.

I am somewhat sensitive to aura’s. I see them as a sound, or like a music that someone emits. It’s very hard to explain because the senses are mixed up (seeing sound, hearing light, etc.). I can usually tell a lot about a person when I meet them.

I personally have no experience with Tarot cards but I have been told my grandmother used them for a while and my mom says it was the darkest year of their life. Whether it was coincidence or not I can’t say, but the year really did have a series of extreme and painful experiences like no other in their lives. My moms family weren’t members (well in name only – hadn’t attended and wouldn’t appear members at all). I guess somewhere along the way someone suggested Norman Vince Peales the Power of Positive Thinking to my grandmother. My mom said that leaving the cards behind and memorizing Peale’s verses completely turned the energy around.

I guess it’s like Brian said there are somethings that just tweak things too much. For what it’s worth I wouldn’t consider them useful. On the horoscope note, the same grandmother worked at a newspaper when she was a girl. One day as the paper went to print they realized the horoscope lady had been ill and hadn’t turned in anything, the solution they sent my grandmother downstairs to pull a horoscope from the year before and have it printed. So much for reading the stars. My guess is she figured tarot cards were as nebulus.

Agree with Brian – stay away from Ouija Boards – they’re not good.

I don’t think Tarot is as bad at all, but Ouija often causes people nasty experiences, including possession type phenomena.

I think your brain tries to make sense of random events and can often attempt to assign meaning where none exists. Often you don’t notice things until something draws your attention and then you can’t stop noticing them. It’s like when you get a new car and suddenly you see that same model everywhere you go.

With Tarot cards, random simple thoughts are placed in your train of thought and then your brain looks for patterns where they could apply. I hate to say it, but it is the same way some church experiences happen.

I had a deck of Tarot cards when I was a kid back in the early 1970’s and tried to learn some of the basic lay-out patterns and how to interpret them.

I recall the deck was supposed to be shuffled three times prior to laying out the cards, by the person whose fortune was going to be told.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that if the same person were to shuffle the cards again (3x) for a second fortune, the odds were against the second lay-out being remotely similar to the first. 😮

    All the Best!
