GuestI am currently working part time, but am unhappy with my work situation. I’m trying to cut it as a writer of prose and drama, and non-fiction, but I need a back up if I fail (which is not completely unlikely) or am only moderately successful (likely). Right now, some of my writing is published, but I’m not paid for that. Sucks. Anyway, I am VERY grateful to the two senior missionaries assigned to this. They’re very pleasant, and have helped me look at things anew. They’ve also given me information about employment that I wish I’d known ten years ago, and which I haven’t seen elsewhere. They’re also much better than the government service here or the careers service I had at school.
I have certain issues which are holding me back, and they are pretty serious. I find it extremely hard to handle interviews, which the entire world revolves around just now. I lack confidence in many ways. I took a mock interview the other day and just froze.
I hope that their work gets me somewhere rather than just making me feel a bit better, but for now that doesn’t hurt.
We often hear bogus testimonies, but I do testify of this service, and am genuinely grateful for it.
So, yes, I do have problems with some parts of the church, and their attitudes, but I am glad this is here.

GuestA few years back, my wife and I attended a workshop on parenting sponsored by the Church. The presenters were a senior missionary couple. The information presented was relevant, useful, and while religion was mentioned, most of the techniques were practical ones, not spiritual. In addition, a family member of mine went through the employment training provided by Deseret Industries. I was pretty skeptical that it would be of any utility but this individual has really benefitted from the program. Both of these experiences surprised me because, while I had heard of these kinds of programs, I was rather dismissive of them. I’ve since revised my opinion. I don’t think the LDS Church has a corner on the market of good social programs but my experience has been they do pretty well with what they have. February 2, 2012 at 11:38 pm #249646Anonymous
GuestThanks for sharing this, Sam. It’s important to remember these things and not get tunnell-visioned on negative things. -
