Any thoughts about today’s piece in the SLTrib about Dan Peterson’s removal as editor of Mormon Studies Review? It seems to pay to have friends in high places.

Well, hurrah for Peggy Fletcher Stack! I truly think JD did the right thing here. Apologetics are suspicious scholarship at best, but one-sided polemics and attacks are inappropriate and not in harmony with the spirit. Contention is never the Way.

I find DCP’s actions and reactions contemptible. For him to claim that he had explicit approval for attack pieces and ad hominem sullies the memory of Neal A. Maxwell.

    D&C 10:28 wrote:

Verily, verily, I say unto you, wo be unto him that lieth to deceive because he supposeth that another lieth to deceive, for such are not exempt from the justice of God.

Lying and deception cut both ways. To be servants of truth, we need to openly accept truth, and not assassinate the character of the man who speaks it.

It seems like an appropriate move. Though I’m not close to it, it sounds like Peterson was unprofessional and personally attacking JD, John had to play some defense and handled it right. I like it that the high-ups in SLC were not in favor of the attack. Shows the attitude that they may not agree with JD, but they don’t want to start the Utah Inquisitions over it.
