GuestHad an absolutely awesome experience on Tuesday. Out of the blue a family from the ward wanted to baptize their 8-year-old daughter on Tuesday evening – got the notice at 1 p.m. that day. Bishop had already done the interview, so it was all cleared. I was the only bishopric member who could attend on such short notice, so I conducted the service. And it was amazing. The Spirit was so strong it was absolutely undeniable. I didn’t go there expecting to be bowled over like that, but it was a profound experience. So despite my continuing doubts, my lingering questions about aspects of Church history and doctrine, and some things the Church does that really bug me, I remain in the Church. As a Liahona I can’t really explain how or why experiences like this happen; but they do, they’re real (at least to me). I’m willing to accept that there are things my brain will never understand, and my logic will never solve. As a recent addition to this site noted in his introduction, I guess Mormonism is in my DNA.

GuestThanks for sharing that experience. Personal experiences almost always are better than programmed experiences. I wish we understood that better as a people.

Guestone of my last special experiences before i became bitter and less active was having attended church just before a man about 30 was getting baptized. you could feel a heavenly aura around him. he was ready to get baptized. the missionaries had prepared him so well. i received a witness of the holiness of the priesthood ordinance of baptism. unfortunately, he went inactive a few weeks later because of how is fiance treated him. she was a church member but caved into peer pressure to break off the engagement in the name of age difference. She was about 19. He was 30.
many church experiences in my life when i was active have included witnesses from the Holy Ghost that what I had experienced was good – including visiting church historical sites, attending a ysa conference, and participating in temple activity (which included getting my own endowment, and participating at 16 in serving as a baptism proxy for baptism of the mortally deceased).
these were choice experiences i will never, ever forget.

GuestI think that is a great example of how it can be hard, but smart to StayLDS while working through doubts or issues and not pull the plug too soon. These experiences can happen and it shows the value of church in our lives.
Now…with a new outlook, making sense of the experiences can be a new challenge, but one where there is growth.
Fact is, they still can happen to some people by keep attending.
