GuestAs I mentioned in my intro, there is a temple being constructed within our ward boundaries. I have several issues that I need to work out regarding the temple, but I will not post them here (maybe in the coming weeks). Anyway, I’ve quickly digressed, back to my question. Over the years I have heard two statements that in my mind are contradictory regarding the purpose of temple work for the dead:
1. We do proxy work to provide these ordinances for those who have not had the opportunity while on this earthly realm.
2. During the millennium, everyone will be resurrected and the temples will be busy as these individuals receive their endowments, etc.
So either I am misunderstanding the timeline involving the millennium, resurrection, and judgement or temple work for the dead is somewhat unnecessary during our lives? Now I know that we are taught that there are blessings for those who attend the temple, but is it really important for the deceased?
Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong in my understanding, that is why I have posted the question

GuestI am the last person who should be answering this question, lol, but it has always been my understanding that both are true. We will get all the people we missed in the millineum. Does this make temple work somewhat pointless? It seems like it might. Maybe just less work to do during the millenium? July 27, 2012 at 7:49 pm #256574Anonymous
GuestThere are at least 2-3 posts in our archives that address this question directly. I’ll try to find them and bump them up, so you can read the comments and add your own. July 27, 2012 at 7:58 pm #256575Anonymous

GuestMy understanding has been based on the assumption that temple work would need to be done pre-resurrection. The resurrection period is supposed to be fluid and lasting a very long time. I think that we could be considered to be in the “morning of the first resurrection” since the resurrection of Christ in the meridian of time and this may last for an indeterminable length of time into the millennium. I had understood that during the millennium resurrected beings and ministering angels of all types would help to open the heavenly records, thus allowing proxy work to go forward as never before. But I had always thought that it would still be proxy work not work that resurrected beings would go through for themselves. Perhaps part of my thoughts in this regard are based upon the idea of the resurrection ordinance being the final ordinance – the culmination of all other ordinances. There are still holes in this way of belief, but it does seem to address the conflict you mentioned. Hope it helps.

GuestIf temple work is only a drop in the bucket for the work that needs to be done, it is important for the living to be connecting with the dead. I think it is important for the dead in the same way, assuming they are aware of what is going on with the work. -
