I took a real step forward and accepted a calling a while ago. An easy one, but I accepted it…given my story, though, I insisted that if they were to call me to the position, I would need a release within a certain amount of time if I decided the calling was no longer working for me — for any reason.

I was assured this would be the case so I accepted the calling. I was told I would be set apart the following week in priesthood meeting, which didn’t happen. The person who called me is quite competent and it was under his full control, and he sees me regularly in the calling. I’m not sure it’s a mistake, although it might be.

My working hypothesis is they are not going to actually set me apart for it, as it’s something you can do without being set apart (teaching Priesthood class). Their reason — probably that they didn’t like the “demands” I placed on the call, which is not the way we do things in our church where the leadership likes ot maintain the administrative control over most things.

And, guess what? I’m VERY Ok with it as without having a formal calling, there is no dependence on my part for them whatsoever for them to release me.

In short, I’m kind of happy the way this has turned out.

did they sustain you in the calling? if so, you are called, and should be set apart. If he just asked you to do the calling, and you put stipulations on it, then they never sustained you, then you aren’t in the calling.

    just curious.

No, they never set me apart or sustained me that I’m aware of. It’s supposed to happen in priesthood quorum meeting said our HPGL, and former SP and BP with a real eye for procedure.

You are right — I’m not in the calling as a formally called individual, but in a way it’s a moot point because they still have me teaching the lessons. I’m functioning as if I have it, am on the lesson schedule, etcetera.

I’m good with the situation, although if the reason they don’t do it is because I used the call as an opportunity to assert myself is a bit disturbing now that I think about it.

At the time, I also indicated that is what I need for the time being to help restore some faith in the process if the calling doesn’t work for me anymore — they knew some past experiences with releases were bothering me so the conversation was probably not a surprise. He said it was fine and seemed just happy I accepted the calling, and agreed to my “condition”.

I have this feeling they have changed their mind, and may be waiting for me to ask for when the sustaining will happen as a subsequent conversation trigger about attitude or obedience or whatever. His style is rather passive and non-confrontational, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he changed his mind, but realized I could teach the group without a formal setting apart. We’ve been switching around the teaching among quorum members for years now and never had a formal calling, so in a way it’s a moot point.

Meh… sounds like they have you defacto in the position so it is a calling in a sense. We had a new teacher sustained in our HPGL, and then was immediately set apart, then taught his first lesson a few weeks ago.

I was recently set apart as choir director (again). I like the feeling of being set apart — it gives legitimacy to the calling — i feel something when being set apart.

SD, don’t over-think this. It’s working for you. Continue to go with that. This gives you the freedom to approach it totally on your own terms, and that’s important to you right now. Glory in it and continue to be grateful.

Also, you’re not wayfarer. Listen to him about lots of things; ignore him on this one. :shh:
