GuestIt seems we have some new users that are more on the traditional side of the fence. Bill Reed, and there’s another user … name escapes me. Anyway, let’s try to foster a good atmosphere for them. We’ll need to do that in a positive way. I would like to minimize the tendency of people who are hurting or in faith crisis to challenge those with faith to the point of chasing them off. All we need to do probably is remind folks that believing is an acceptable path in our community. August 20, 2012 at 3:16 pm #257605Anonymous
GuestYes, I noticed that. Perhaps we’ve gone mainstream? August 20, 2012 at 3:35 pm #257606Anonymous

GuestI recently listened to the MS podcast with bishop Bill Reel, then I come here today and find he is really active. I think it’s great on one hand but I’m a little hesitant with my hope for a perfect outcome on the other. I have to tell you all the way through the podcast I couldn’t help but see all the similarities between him and my own bishop. They have so much in common about their perspectives you wouldn’t believe it. Both do not come from pioneer familes, etc. I mention this because I can imagine what would happen if my bishop came here. Conversations would start out nice enough, but I think he would get more and more frustrated as time went on that he wasn’t seeing more “success” in helping others to gain a perspective that is more similar to his own — which I describe as a broadened and charitable yet party-line (toward “apologetic”) mindset. FYI
One thing that really perked my ears during the podcast was his saying “If some evidence came along that convinced me that (paraphrase- the church isn’t the sole authorized church of God on the earth) then I wouldn’t stay.”
My question is how will he allow room for others to stay when he may not understand their need outside of his paradigm?
I wonder if I should initiate a topic, as I listened to the podcast I wanted to respond with “You couldn’t get ME out of the church, no matter what kind of evidence you could present!”

GuestInteresting perspective Orson. Might be really interesting to start a topic like that. I think in the long run, he might not stay. It really depends. I’m all for trying to make it a better environment for traditional folks still. Gotta try. August 21, 2012 at 12:59 am #257609Anonymous
GuestDidn’t listen to the podcast since I hate podcasts. I’m confused by the use of the word “stay” – do you mean stay in the church or stay at the site? I think Orson was saying that Bill Reed said he could encounter information that would cause him to leave the church (?). Then Brian said maybe he won’t stay (meaning at the site?). I’m just getting a little lost. August 21, 2012 at 3:01 am #257610Anonymous
GuestYes Hawk, you got it right. I know it’s confusing. I am also all for making this site as friendly to traditional members as possible, I’m just thinking out loud about the complexities.

GuestJury’s a little bit out for me on this guy, honestly. I loved him at first, but the honeymoon is ending. Not ending badly, just settling in to real life now. He’s a little buggy to me. September 14, 2012 at 9:48 pm #257612Anonymous

He is buggy to me too.It is subtle, but there is an aura about him that he wants to be open minded, yet thinks he is right and his hoping to enlighten people on this site to see things his way.
His last thread of the SP talk. He posts it and then responds, “Isn’t that strange?” …people don’t see it as awesome as I do.
He’s clearly put a label on this site in his mind. I like divergent views on the site, and he’s certainly welcome. But he’s not as open minded as he thinks he is.

Yeah, I’m about the only person I know who is as open-minded as I think I am.

GuestIf everyone else could be as open minded as me, it would be such a better world! :eh:

GuestI listened to his Mo Sto podcast with John. It was pretty good, but mostly because John is such a good interviewer. I started listening to one of his own, and it’s not nearly as interesting. I do think he is more open minded than a lot of people (like my current and past few bishops), but I don’t think he’s as liberal as many of us here. He does seem more informed than your average bishop, but he does seem a little pushy about his own way of thinking about things.
