GuestA quick question for those of you who know a lot more than I do. Are Church units supposed to do fundraising activities?
The reason I ask is that several years ago we were living in a very small village (with 2 wards none the less) and every year our ward sold pies to fund-raise for YM and YW. Then a letter was sent out from someone higher up in the church and we were told to stop. The whole community was crushed as it was such strong tradition that everyone looked forward to. Regardless of the community feeling the local leaders put an end to the fundraising.
In our new Stake there is a chapel across the street from the local professional football team’s stadium. Each home game one ward has their YM run the parking lot at the church and charge people to park as a fundraising activity for scouts.
Is this kosher from a big Church perspective? Or was the request to stop fundraising in our old ward a local decision?
Does your local ward/branch fund-raise?

No – except for Scouts, and that should be one organized activity annually.

I’ve heard the same… one scout fundraiser annually.
But then one ward did an auction for the young women to help earn money for girls camp. It was the ward dinner and there was both a silent auction for baked goods and a live auction for services (3 hours of babysitting, 4 hours of hard labor etc.). Perhaps that wasn’t seen as fundraising since it was confined to the ward itself and was kinda fun.

GuestI’ve seen that also, Roy – and, techinically, it is against at least two directives in the CHI. I don’t like it for one primary reason: it publicly pressures some people to contribute donations while others can’t afford to do so, and that is especially obvious in the case of parents who bid on their daughter’s food while other parents can’t do so.

GuestFundraising for Scouts should be for a specific purpose that will be spent that year, and not for just padding the account. Then obviously the ward shouldn’t use that fund for footing the Christmas party bill.

GuestOh, and I think the leadership above the stake level would pop a gasket if they knew people were being charged to park in the church’s parking lot. Seriously, I can’t imagine SLC would do anything but pick up the phone and make sure it stopped – yesterday.

Yes but our stake has had a couple seventies the reside within it’s boundary. In fact one was at our ward on Sunday to hear his father (a former GA) speak and was present when the reminder that our ward’s turn was coming up was given. So at least the Area seventy knows what is going on.

GuestRead the book. It’s online and available to all. http://www.lds.org/handbook/handbook-2-administering-the-church/activities/13.6.8?lang=eng#136 September 26, 2012 at 2:21 pm #259829Anonymous
GuestThis also happens in our area. And shouldn’t YW be allowed to utilize this to raise their money for camp? At least once a year anyhow? September 26, 2012 at 3:35 pm #259830Anonymous
GuestI have found that how strongly the “one fundraiser a year” rule is enforced depends on the will of the local leadership. In our Ward, they do far more than that and everyone seems to turn a blind eye to it. September 27, 2012 at 4:01 pm #259831Anonymous
GuestAccording to the link Thoreau provided there can be one fundraising activity within the boundaries of the stake or ward. It says it should be for camp or an annual activity or to purchase equipment. It never mentions Young Men or Young Women or Scouts. Friends of Scouting is mentioned separately. -
