I read this great article by a gay man who came out of the closet at Libery University, founded by the Reverend Jerry Falwell. I was truly heartened by the responses this man received when he came out to his classmates and professors. I was particularly struck by the juxtaposition of this man’s angst and anxiety over coming out in such a conservative, evangelical setting and the warmth, love and grace he received from those around him. I sincerely hope that if a fellow ward member, friend or family member were to come out that I and the others around me would have the same grace and love. If you’ve got 10 minutes, do yourself a favor and read this.

I read about half of the article as I don’t have more time but it is good. I thought I would share something interesting with you in regards to Jerry Falwell. In 2005, I attended an ex-gay Exodus conference in Ashville North Carolina. It was during a time I still thought my son could change. I was so surprised when I heard that Jerry Falwell was going to be speaking as even the ex-gay type gays could not stand him and weren’t too happy he was there. I could tell Jerry was very nervous when he got up to speak but seemed very sincere. The main part of his speech was apologizing and saying that he was wrong about the things he had said after 911 and other places. He spoke about how God had to teach him how to love gays. A number of fathers spoke who also apologized for their gay bashings at one time and how God had to humble them.

I read a good quote the other day that is exactly what I think: ” I have reconciled myself with the thought that the sexual orientation of individuals has nothing to do with my salvation. How I treat them does” I am so thankful God showed me how to accept and love my son and that He created him for His glory. Us straight people’s salvation is on the line with how we treat gays and those that are different.

    That is an awesome quote.
