GuestOver the next couple of days, as I have spare time, I need to do software maintenance and check on some things. We’re getting warnings from the hosting service that our CPU usage is high. It’s spike dramatically since last month. I don’t know what’s causing it yet, but it could be someone hijacking the server. I will apply updates to the software packages and try to figure it out. If I don’t get it under control, the hosting company could suspend our account.

GuestRan into more problems than I expected. It took a little while to re-install and debug the Activation Justification mod we use to screen people who register. Let me know if you see anything in the forums that doesn’t seem to be functioning correctly. Also, the website seems to have reverted back to the previous WordPress theme. I’m still trying to debug that. That isn’t quite as critical as the forums, and I gotta get some work done today at work

GuestI think a few of my posts got deleted. I know I responded to this post about “performance issues”, and Ray made a joke, but those 2 posts are gone. Also, On the Oliver Cowdery/Joseph Smith post, my response got deleted (I was #10, but there are just about 7 now.) It’s not a huge deal, but I wonder what other posts got deleted. GuestThat’s correct. Some of the posts are gone. Sorry. I had to revert to an earlier backup due to problems with some code I had to debug. July 16, 2013 at 11:31 pm #270932Anonymous
GuestThe site was suspended last night. I was able to talk to tech support this evening for a while after work, and got a guy who did more digging into it than I can do through the my CPanel interface and server logs. We’re getting slammed by some stupid search engines and spiders. Bing in particular was creating thousands of hits. A lot of site operators are getting mad at them for that kind of stupid site crawling. The tech made some adjustments to slow down server response, which should make those spiders chill out. There was also some evidence of a little brute force password attacks (periods where there were 100’s of hits to the registration pages). We have that locked down as good as can be done though.
He did not think the site had been hijacked. That’s good news.
The account was un-suspended, and I’ll continue to monitor it.

GuestThanks, Brian. I love technology, but sometimes . . . 😡 July 17, 2013 at 2:33 pm #270934Anonymous
GuestThis morning, I also implemented a server-level block of the following IP address ranges: 123.151.*.*
123.150.*.*
Those both resolve to an ISP in China
netname: CHINANET-TJ
descr: CHINANET TIANJIN PROVINCE NETWORK
descr: Tianjin Telecom Corporation
descr: NO.11 LIUJING ROAD,HEDONG DISTRICT,TIANJIN
country: CN
There were about a dozen IP addresses in that range generating
tens of thousandsof hits per month and eating up enormous amounts of bandwidth. It was actually as much bandwidth as all the other users combined. I don’t know what kind of nonsense they are up to, but I seriously doubt they need help resolving questions of Mormon faith… 😡 July 18, 2013 at 3:12 am #270935Anonymous
GuestI was wondering why the site was down. Thanks for letting us know, and thanks for all your hard work! -
