I’m sitting here, middle-aged, with a flood of 1970’s memories of Jerry and Gail Argetsinger washing over me. They were completely dedicated to the gospel and to bringing love and life into our little mid-western branch. I don’t know (or, unfortunately, maybe I do) how things would have gone if he had been open about his sexuality. But, it went the way it went, and there are thousands of Mormons with nothing but respect for a now-openly gay Mormon man.

Both are quick to say that marriage to a woman is not a pattern they recommend for other Mormon gays, nor is it one that the LDS Church now recommends as it once did.
Only 4 percent of mixed-orientation marriages survive, Argetsinger says. “I would never tell a gay man to marry a woman, unless the [Holy] Spirit confirmed it as it did for us — and I don’t mean a bishop.”
I remember reading about a gay man married to a woman that was advocating against gay marriage because of the benefits to the children of having both a Father and a Mother. Sounds like this family plan has a 96% failure rate… not exactly ideal for the kids. The problem as I see it is not that that a nuclear family model is not ideal – the problem is that thousands of children are already born to gay parents (through various circumstances) and not permitting such gay partners to marry is preventing them from adding the stabilizing effect that committed marriage might provide into their lives.
