Hi. I stumbled on the site here after finding hawkgrrrl’s writings on By Common Consent mentioned on some site. I think it was the garments post, but I don’t know what led me there. I was searching, but I’m not sure what I was hoping to find.

Anyway, I’m coming off a couple years of relative inactivity. During that whole time, I wasn’t really questioning my beliefs, or anything, I just had other things going on and church is what got dropped. In the year or so since I started attending (almost) weekly, I have been uneasy about Faith. I still struggle to point at what gave rise to my questions and concerns, but there they are. I think it’s largely from seeing some friends and acquaintances leave and/or fall away, combined with not much of a spiritual support group. (my wife doesn’t have problem with the church, but she has no interest in all things spiritual.) I think I’ve worked through the worst of it; I no longer feel the internal turmoil that has beset me in recent months. Largely through this site and finding and reading through Rough Stone Rolling. I have found a set of beliefs that works for me, for now. RSR was exactly the book I needed: an honest look at Joseph’s life from a believer. I guess I needed to know it could be done. (And the little companion book of his thoughts during the book tour did more good than my recent scripture study. YMMV.)

You all here helped me get through. Or at least accept where I am. I have no anger towards the church. I have few problems with WoW, tithing, garments, etc. So in many ways, I feel like a bit of an outsider, and I honestly don’t know how much I’m going to participate. That being said, you here showed me that a testimony is a deeply personal thing. It’s mine. And just because I don’t believe like someone else, does NOT discount what I believe and feel, nor does it necessarily make my testimony better or worse than anyone else’s. My testimony is a reflection of where I am. (Pick whatever value of “testimony” you’d like.)

Anyway, the insight to testimony was a big deal. And it’s nice that I got to learn that lesson from a bunch of people who want to stay. Cause I want to stay, too.

One of the things I appreciate about this board is the reference to books and other sources of information. I think I first heard about Rough Stone Rolling on this board. I also appreciated RSR and Bushman’s published journal(?) of his thoughts after the publication of the book. Both were very interesting and enlightening.

This is something that I am slowly coming to understand. In any event, I hope you enjoy your time on StayLDS.

This really jumped out at me. There is such peace in acceptance. You are acceptable. Your feelings, thoughts, and perceptions are acceptable. I believe that this is a glimpse of how God sees us.

I imagine disembodied voices floating through the mist.

Roy: Argggggg! I just stepped in dog poo! Does anyone else have dog poo on their path?

Cwald: Don’t get me started on dog poo.

Ray: Perhaps we can parse the meaning of the poo.

Hawkgrrrl: How you feel about the poo might vary depending on your meyer-jung type.

Wayfarer: I am totally zen about the poo on the path.

Heber: I build my faith that God is there, even though he doesn’t intervene to prevent the poo.

Silent Dawning: There are a bunch of cool management techniques for dog poo removal.

Spock: This is ridiculous. Poo happens!

Devil’s Advocate: The problem is when so much is harped about the evils of poo and then we see people stepping into poo without any dire consequences that anyone can tell.

Thanks to all for keeping me from getting lonely!

Hi, lepidolite – So glad you’re here! This was thunderbolt out of the heavens for me, too. Ahhhh! I would give anything to have really “gotten” this thirty years ago.

Hey there. Welcome. This site has also helped me want to stay in the church when times have gotten tough. I have never read Rough Stone Rolling before. I would like to take a look at it.
