GuestHere is a quick view of the financial statements of a single Ward: You will see that about 7% of the Ward budget goes to fund “charitable programs” in this particular Ward in Cardston, Alberta. There is also a large portion of the budget that goes to “qualified donees” (almost all of the remainder after funding the Ward budget). We don’t know the identities of these ‘qualified donees’ but it could be some other church entity. I think it’s highly unlikely that the expenses to qualified donees goes local or even humanitarian needs (with the exception of fast offerings, how most other funds get disbursed is normally made at higher levels than the Ward)…probably funnelled to some central account.
So, we see that about 7% of your tithing dollars goes back to fund Ward programs. If you do a search on other Ward names in Canada, you will see that sometimes the amount given to the Ward to fund its programs is as low as 5%, and has high as 12%.

GuestProbably worth pointing out that the operating costs (electricity, gas, maintenance etc) doesn’t come out of this. The $10k will be solely the Ward budget for local activities and expenses. I’d be interested to know whether welfare assistance is included or not.

GuestWow… this one’s generating half a million $s. That’s in Canadian dollars though. $500k in USD is what… about 19 bucks?

Worth pointing out that UK law requires LDS accounts to be publicly viewable too.
Don’t know why the USA insists on keeping them secret. Religious organizations deserve as much transparency as anything else.

I agree. Being open about how money is spent would make sure the money is spent more efficiently and responsibly.
When an organisation knows their accounts are not audited it is easier to start bending rules and cutting corners. Just look at the MPs expenses in Westminster!

GuestYeah, American separation of church and state is successful and admirable in most circumstances, but not here. I don’t think the LDS is riddled with corruption, but some of their expenditure eg antigay marriage groups, shopping malls could be better spent elsewhere. They fear bankruptcy, and as we are a family church with an old leadership it is three or four steps back to GAs who can remember church poverty.
I think the MP problem has some bearing here. Those guys set their own pay, make the laws etc, so it allows them privileges other people don’t get eg regular pay rises, expenses etc. The church has commercial advantages and lack of transparency.
This also means that bad investments can be made, and also outsiders can take it for a ride.
