GuestHas anyone followed the polygamy TV shows that are on now? I used to watch one and found that I was trying to accept their ideals as “I might have to live this one day, so I better get used to it and force my mind around it.”
I finally … grew up … and realized that I do not feel peace when I watch the shows. I’m all for people living any way they want to, but something bothers me about the shows…perhaps it’s because they use their religion as a reason to live this way…I don’t know, but I’d love to hear what others think about the shows.
I’ve stopped watching them and feel a bit lighter after doing so.

I’m really NOT missing out on that much.

GuestI do watch TV, probably more than I should when I could be accomplishing more worthwhile things. And I do watch “junk” TV (Amish Mafia, for instance). But I was unaware that there are shows about polygamy. Apparently I haven’t missed much. October 29, 2013 at 6:39 pm #275698Anonymous
GuestI did watch the entire series of Big Love partly because I was fascinated with a major media portrayal of anything Mormon related. Unfortunately, the portrayal was very bad. In several instances it seemed that the dig at Mormonism wasn’t even relevant to the plot. My favorite example of this is when one of the lead female characters is considering putting her child up for adoption and she meets with this creepy couple where the husband is gay but has married to help cure his gayness. Absolute zero plotline development.
😈 I really didn’t mind that they included brief phrases from the sealing ceremony in one episode. That at least was relevant to the plot. Stick to the story please and don’t meander into “this is another odd tidbit from some corner of Mormonism” territory.
DW watched Sister Wives. From my vantage point the show seemed more about love triangles and jealousy than religion but I never really watched.

I have grown more and more comfortable saying that I don’t believe that we will certain things about the future. Like that we will be called to move to Missouri, or that we will re-institute polygamy, or that two Mormon apostles will be killed and dragged through the streets of Jerusalem before being resurrected. I’m ok with others believing these things but I try to get people to understand that these are not official church positions that we should feel bound to.
I’m not really a fan of the ten tribes returning from the north thing either – but unfortunately the articles of faith would be much pricklier to argue against.

GuestSisterwives (TLC) Polygamy USA (Natinoal Geographic)
My 5 Wives (TLC)
and The Dargers had a TV episode
I do feel a loss of the spirit when watching those shows, but it took me a while to recognize what it was.
And…you don’t think we’ll all be called to live in Missouri?

Life is so much better without polygamy looming ahead. (Who knows, maybe I’ll die and my husband will remarry. That’s a different question.) But what I’m talking about is getting rid of the pit in my stomach that’s been there since I first read Section 132. I choose not to believe it. In another one of your posts you said, “If we start picking and choosing what to believe (or even who to believe), then we don’t have much of a religion, do we?” Now I care less about Having A Religion and more about having a
life, and mine is better when I start with a loving God and follow to logical conclusions. October 30, 2013 at 6:12 pm #275701Anonymous
GuestI think these are in the category of sideshow or trainwreck–hard to look away from and fascinating to others. Perhaps even taking joy in the misery of others 😆 That said, I find it hard to watch a few minutes of these shows and turn the channel. Happens with shows like Survivor, The Bachelor, etc., although no polygamy involved–just the whole reality thing that is a bit intriguing. So I make an effort to not even start watching the beginning of any of these shows.
I’m happier and don’t feel like I’m wasting my time:yawn: December 5, 2013 at 1:43 am #275702Anonymous

GuestSlightly related, I watched that Duck Dynasty the other day. So obviously scripted. The characters look like Russian Orthodox priests, but are likable in some ways.
However, reading up on the show, I found several things… firstly they
started bleeping out words even though they don’t cuss (this had to be changed), and removing
their prayers and church involvement. They seem to be sincere Christians, but TV doesn’t want positive portrayals of religion, it wants conflict
and bigotry. It’s more interested in the duck folk as badly groomed redneck freaks who’ve got rich by accident, than as decent country people with worthwhile values.

Ever watched Amish Mafia? I’m not sure any of that is real and it is clearly scripted. The Amish are a very faithful people, and while I know every bushel has some bad apples, I don’t think the bad apples on that show are real. There is so much positive to say and portray about the Amish, why do they choose this probably fake negative side? IMO it’s for the same reason as the polygamy thing – people watch. If nobody watched there would be no sponsors and there would be no show.

I agree with both of you, Sam and DJ – and there is a lesson in there for us, as well.

I haven’t seen Amish Mafia. I don’t have a TV, and don’t actually live in the USA. One of my friends has seemingly infinite channels (every language under the Sun – he watches Bollywood stuff for example), and I got to see Duck Dynasty.
I know there are a number of issues with the Amish, like women’s rights, and probably gay rights, however, I deeply respect them, and I would oppose any form of corporate or government bullying of them.
” If nobody watched there would be no sponsors and there would be no show.”
You hit the nail on the head. People don’t want to see Mormons like us, who are educated, who are tolerant, who don’t beat their wives, who are monogamous, who are cosmopolitan etc etc They want to see polygamist rednecks.
That said I think modern America is VERY hypocritical about polygamy. if I have multiple sexual partners, people don’t bat an eyelid here, but if I have multiple spouses, they frown on it.

GuestI just can’t watch these shows. I don’t watch any reality TV, but I didn’t watch Big Love either. I just find polygamy repulsive, and its practitioners deluded. I also don’t read D&C 132! I also grew up around the Amish, so I find the concept of Amish Mafia pretty ridiculous. They are hard working and family oriented (in a way I guess so was Tony Soprano). Reality TV just likes to put two unlikely concepts together like peaceful Amish + organized crime or marital trust + serial infidelity.

I recently saw some of Sister Wives on Netflix too. They are a loving family that are far more normal than one might think. I really felt for their plight in having to move to escape persecution and trying to find homes close together. Their version is probably the best way that polygamy could ever work, and yet it still seemed very clear to me the needlessness of the practice. The problems they had due to polygamy could be solved by not practicing it (duh) and the benefits of it could be gained from close friendships. I see now how ridiculous a practice it is and I don’t believe it was ever from God.
