This could probably go in the book and media section, but it’s important enough to me that I wanted to put it here where I felt like more people might see it. If you have not been introduced to him, I hope he can be as impactful to some of you as he has been to me.

There are so many things I love about Father Rohr’s perspective and honesty that I wouldn’t know where to begin. If I must be perfectly honest, I wish we had a Richard Rohr in the Q12 or above.

A few things he touches on in this talk:

  • – American culture is
    a
culture, not necessarily the ideal culture.

    – Admission that Descartes was correct in his observation of the western person…we really do think we are our thoughts.

    – The ego uses words to get what it wants or to argue and prove itself right.

    – 24:55 – Silence is a kind of wholeness of being. [My own connection here: Tolle says in the A New Earth “The New Testament’s “Be ye perfect” is a mistranslation of the original Greek word, which means whole. This is to say, you don’t need to become whole, but be who you already are…”]

    – Faith and silence are practicing for death.

    – Observation of the all-too-frequent duality in religion: My denomination has it and your denomination doesn’t.

    – It’s not about winning anymore, it’s about being.

    – “Even charity can be prostituted.” [Man, a resounding “Amen!” to this!]

Excellent – and I think we do have one at the top of our current leadership.

As an example of his voice of peace and reason, so many Christians want to just bash Eckhart Tolle, but I love Rohr’s comments: http://www.eckharttolle.com/article/Spirituality-And-The-Christian-Tradition” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.eckharttolle.com/article/Spirituality-And-The-Christian-Tradition

Here is an example of the types of fearful Christian critiques that contrast Rohr, if you’re interested: http://www.cbn.com/spirituallife/BibleStudyAndTheology/perspectives/carpenter-abanes_newearth.aspx” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.cbn.com/spirituallife/BibleStudyAndTheology/perspectives/carpenter-abanes_newearth.aspx

I definitely agree that Elder Uchtdorf walks a similar path, though I guess I would say sometimes it seems his hands are tied.
