I watched “Saving Mr. Banks” for the first time the other day. I thought it was pretty good. Then, as I can’t seem to help doing, I looked it up to see how close the movie was to the truth. Let me tell you, NOT EVEN CLOSE. Here’s what was true: P.L. Travers did write Mary Poppins, Disney produced a movie called Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers had a bad childhood, what Walt said about his father was true. That’s about it. Travers wasn’t anything like she was portrayed in the movie. She had a pretty wild life and did some very questionable things.

Anyway, that all got me thinking about other movies about real people that were totally misleading and two popped into my head, “Julie and Julia” and “The Sound of Music.” I loved “Julie and Julia” partly because there were some similarities to my life that I related to (not the cooking part. I hate to cook), UNTIL, I looked into the real Julie Powell. She’s nothing like she’s portrayed in the movie and she even called it “the romcom version of my life.” Her second book was bizarre to say the least. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you why “The Sound of Music” came to mind.

I’ve had similar feelings about finding out the truth behind those movies as I did with my FC, but on a much different level, of course. It got me thinking that I’d been taught the Disney-fied version of the gospel my whole life. Once I learned the true-life version, there was no going back. I guess that’s where the disappointment and disillusionment come from. I still want the truth to be the way I learned it, even though some good growth and positive things have come from it all.

So, my question is: have any of you had similar experiences that can compare to your faith crisis. It doesn’t have to be movies. I guess Santa Clause would be another example.

Except that because I didn’t have the major investment in Santa Claus, the hurt inherent to my FC was much more profound. I had never really thought about it from your point of view, but yes, I do see a corollary between the “churchified” version of the truth and the true version of the truth and I do believe that’s what leads some people (like me) to a crisis of faith.

I love the storyteling aspect of movies. I am very aware of ways in which movie makers adjust the historical narrative in order to fit the medium or even just to tell a better story. I feel like how we tell these stories tells us more about ourselves and our current society than it does about the historical characters that are being represented.
