The Church has produced a nice video with a great message. I saw this buried on a link that mom3 had posted, but wanted to bring this to the fore. I love this because I feel that it focuses more on the central element of the Gospel more than I have seen the Church do in most of its media:

I also like the simple messages.

    Thanks for sharing the video.

I liked this, too. I like that it is much more direct in showing faith in Christ. I think this is groundbreaking for the church.

It’s now on the front page of the website too.

The actor who plays Jesus is one of my all-time-favourites from the church. I know a little about the selection process and they auditioned people all around the world with the specific request to find someone who was not from the “wasatch front.”

I think he has a very open and welcoming face. I also like the fact that his hair is often a mess. Some of the previously perfectly quaffed actors were a bit unbelievable.

Really nice. I had to watch twice right off the bat because I was several seconds into it before realizing it wasn’t an ad. Starting with modern “miracles” was interesting. The Berlin Wall was the most effective for me. The excitement, the joy, the fast-spreading news of the wall’s destruction is something people (of a certain age) remember well.

Me too! I really enjoyed it and watched it again all the way through. Really well done!

Is it bad that I’m avoiding watching this movie, even if it does have a great message? I had a friend on a mission send me a very generic message on facebook asking me if I would share it on facebook and telling me he hoped I could feel the “hastening of the work.” I don’t know why the “hastening” concept bothers me so much. I guess it hits a soft spot for me right now. Anyway, the experience left a bad taste in my mouth and now I’m avoiding the video. I think I’m doing it as a knee-jerk reaction to the guilt-tripping I got in the message. The guilt-tripping and more importantly, fear-instilling tactics used by the church is a particularly painful thing for me. I don’t know how to say it other than I don’t like feeling scared and I think to make others feel afraid in order to get them to do “the right thing” is wrong. I know it sounds minor, but it’s honestly a major point of contention I have with the Church and something I pray (or rather, lament to God) about often.

On another level, if the video wasn’t made by the Church, I probably would’ve already watched it and even “shared” it on facebook by now. I guess I don’t want to be seen as another person trying to promote how great and dandy their belief in the Church is when I don’t feel that way, if that makes sense? I find it kind of sad how I’ve lost the will to be a “missionary” now.

So watch it and make up your mind at that point whether or not to share it – for your own reasons and not for the reasons of someone else.

University, it actually looks like it might not be made by the church – it’s not a typical church video (but it is made by the church). And it’s only a couple minutes.

Interestingly, I asked my missionary son yesterday during our live email session if they were using it – he hadn’t heard of it. It is available in Spanish (I guessed that’s why there was no speaking – easier translation), maybe his MP didn’t get the memo. I suppose maybe my son didn’t get the memo.

Anyway, there is a nice summary of the whole initiative here: https://www.lds.org/church/news/church-to-launch-because-of-him-easter-initiative?lang=eng” class=”bbcode_url”>https://www.lds.org/church/news/church-to-launch-because-of-him-easter-initiative?lang=eng

And FWIW, there are others of us here who are also bothered by the whole hasten the work idea and/or it’s accompanying dogmatism.

Nothing wrong with you for not wanting to subject yourself to what you are Leary of. There’s obviously a different community here, so no pressure exists in that way. While the video in question is nice and does have a great message that many here will enjoy, the real interest to this community lies in the fact that the Church produced this video. It represents a departure from the norm. In the words of DarkJedi, with which I agree, “I think this is groundbreaking for the Church.”

There is no expectation here of sharing it or even liking it.

As I have reflected more on this through the day, beyond the video, there is a whole initiative or program here – almost as if we’re doing Holy Week. I have long felt that one of the major failings of the missionary program is that it doesn’t take into account that almost everyone we teach is already Christian or Christian oriented. OTOH, I also think the program doesn’t really know how to deal effectively with those who aren’t Christian.

I watched it and definitely agree that it’s outside of the norm for LDS videos. When it started playing, I thought it was a commercial and had to rewind once I realized I’d zoned out for the first portion. The church really is taking its social media push seriously.

DarkJedi: Agreed, although I think since the church is trying to be a Christ-centered religion, it’s emphasis on Christ, even in its marketing strategies, is understandable. But it could do better with reaching out to non-Christians, or agnostics and unaffiliated spiritualists, which I suspect a large percentage of the millennials identify as. The Church’s missionary efforts in North America are going to have to adjust to reach out to those who identify with the secular form of spirituality which is pretty common in my peers.

I absolutely love this video. It is IMO so full of pure, simple truths of Christ, without dabbling in the performance based stuff and all the simplistic statements that so characterize the correlation committee’s stuff.

I have watched it 4-5 times and have forwarded it to all my Mormon and non-Mormon friends, because it is so uplifting w/o being the slightest bit preachy. It reminds me very much of the “Saints Unified Voices directed by Gladys Knight” which I attended this week. (I’m making a separate post about it.)
