Hello people. My wife is giving a talk (only 7 min.). The subject is “Love thy neighbor as thyself”. I’m writing on her behalf – basically I’m just looking for good angles/perspective that isn’t your “normal primary talk”. That everyone already have heard 100 times.

As said – any angles/perspectives/stories/talks are welcome. She of course have thought about some stuff, but its always great to get ideas from others.

    Thanks a ton!!

You could show how “love your neighbour as yourself” is another articulation of the golden rule (do unto others…)

This is a message that has been communicated by God to his children in every culture or community, whatever their faith tradition.

There’s also our quotes collection. If you view this page on a PC/laptop you can view by “theme” via the tag cloud.

    Eg quotes on acceptance/respect here:

That’s a wonderful topic. I woudln’t even mind hearing the primary version of it.

Much more important than the content of a talk is the form of the talk. Here is where I struggle:

    – Speaker: Joking about how the bishop cornered me in the hallway, and next time I’ll be sure to be on the opposite side of the building. Me: 15 seconds in, and my faith is wavering.

    – Speaker: looks down to a piece of paper and starts to read. Me: I disconnect, stop paying close attention, look at my watch, reach for my NT. It’s very likely that if a person reads their talk, I will hear snippets, but won’t even know what the topic was when they reach the last line on the paper.

    – Speaker: makes any quote from a GC talk. Me: Done. Sometimes I stay, sometimes I stand up and walk out, but I’m done listening or caring. It’s not any kind of protest, I simply have no interest in hearing a talk about someone else’s talk. Those GC talks are all online. I could read each one of them 3 times a day if I wanted.

As for the topic itself, take a look at Romans 14… not the KJV, however… it’s hard to parse.

That’s a good topic to draw. I get assigned to give a talk about once every 2 – 3 months. I have to give a talk in a month about using the BoM as a missionary tool. Why did I say yes to that one? Perhaps I’ll create another thread if I struggle to mold the topic to something I can get behind.

With a topic like love thy neighbor I might be tempted to follow Jesus’ example of the lessons he taught in the parable of the good Samaritan. Find a modern day equivalency and discuss, then refer back to the good Samaritan. That’s where I might start thinking about things.

Another thing as it relates to “love your neighbor as thyself”… sometimes I feel like people translate that into “I have the truth, therefore I know what is best for my neighbor; I have the onus of telling my neighbor how he’s going to hell unless he comes around to my way of thinking.”

Maybe I’m way off base but sometimes love thy neighbor feels that way. I might try to subtlety course correct that ideology.

I might focus on the need to get to know people and what they want (their goals, dreams, hopes, etc.) and helping them with those things. Loving others isn’t trying to get them to see things the same way I do or even sharing with them what makes me happy and/or brings me joy or peace, especially over and over again.

I might talk about how I would feel if others did things to me that I think of doing to them – and then talk about what I mentioned in my first sentence about helping them fulfill their own vision of their best selves.

Bear – I think this is a great talk topic. I’ve already written what I would say for this, there is so much. I agree with everyone’s comments. I am wondering what seems hardest for you, is it the whole concept – cause it is broad, or is it making it church enough.

The Joseph Smith quote about dying for another man’s beliefs would be good here, and tons of stuff from Christ – his teachings, his ministry examples. I am trying not to give the talk I wrote for this, but I see this as the best gospel topic to have ever. Good luck. Check in. We are rooting for you.
