GuestSometimes I get into my own little bubble and forget how other women in other religions perform in life. For the past 10 years I have worked closely with strong Evangelical families. Our kids are members of a theater group. For nearly 9 months of the year, we as parents volunteer (mandatory volunteering if your child is cast in a show) to do a lot of background work – costumes, sets, so on. I love these people. I will miss deeply my time with them. We, as parents have cheered, cried, worked for our kids. There is nothing more amazing than standing hand in hand with these kids in prayer – at the beginning and end of every rehearsal and performance. As parents we chat about what parents chat about, it’s a nice loving and human community.
I’ve been away for six months, but am back now and in charge of a group of volunteers. Tonight the conversation turned to women being submissive to their husband. The husband was and will always be the final decision maker. I just listened. These beautiful devoted wives live the Apostle Pauls lessons on “wives submit to your husbands” and so on.
As I listened I really tried to imagine an Ordain Women group rising up in their midst. Holy Smokes – I can’t imagine the reaction from the church of Evangelicalism if that happened. I needed tonight’s perspective. I get input in my home, not just as the home maker/mother, but as a person. My vote counts here and other places I hadn’t considered.

Yes, marriages that follow the bible literally for how to constitute the relationship are not “equal” marriages.
But Christianity is such a broad spectrum – there are progressive thinkers such as Rob Bell that are at one end and stuanch conservatives at the other end. For most I suppose it is the local environment (with the stances held by the local congregation, pastor, immeadiate family, and spouse) that matters most in these matters.
