Hi guys, The site was being hit recently and I was getting warnings about exceeding resource usage (usually an indicator of some type of attack). It’s a problem because the hosting service will shut down the site if it goes on for a few days without being fixed. I’ve had to block IP addresses and ranges in the past, mostly coming from China. Anyway, this wasn’t one of those problems I could easily identify.
I updated the Forum and WordPress software versions in case it was a security exploit. That seems to have the usage down … but it broke part of our customized registration on the forums.
Long story short, new users can’t register right now. It isn’t a simple fix. I’m going to have to debug the problem in the Justification module. That’s where we ask people to justify why they want to post on the site. It’s been a very effective feature for giving early warning signs about people who might be trouble. I am slammed at work this week, so I probably won’t be able to sit down long enough to work through it until the weekend.
Just wanted to give you all a heads up. Registration is broken, but will get fixed in the next couple of days. Everything else seems to be working OK.
Let me know if you hear of any other problems.
Should we consider posting a greatly abbreviated version of this message on the public site, so people who want to register will know what’s going on and try again next week – rather than getting frustrated and leaving for good? Just a thought that hit.
