GuestI was curious about why there seems to be so many statements about recent events coming from people in the PR positions in the church and not from the actual leadership. Even in my ward today 2 members of the Stake presidency sat on the stand while the Stake director of PR gave the talk. He really was being very clear about where the membership needed to stand on some hot button issues. He was reminding us that to be a true follower of the gospel we needed to be willing to sacrifice everything including our opinion on certain things. It could just be that he is a great speaker and a really likeable nice guy, or is this more like the leadership having a press secretary so they don’t stick their foot in their mouth. Is this the trend anywhere else? June 22, 2014 at 10:02 pm #286789Anonymous
GuestThat is a good question, and I don’t know the answer. I do believe the top leadership does want these to appear to be local matters, handled in accordance with standard procedures. FWIW, while I am sure they are very aware of what’s happening, I am not at all sure there is any coordinated effort. June 22, 2014 at 10:08 pm #286790Anonymous
GuestThe stake PR rep spoke in my ward today too (also backed up by 2 SP members). So maybe you and I are actually in the same ward (heh) or this is a coordinated effort and every Stake PR is going to be doing the rounds for the next month or two. Ours have a pretty nonspecific talk. I don’t think anyone is going to specifically name OW from the pulpit. June 22, 2014 at 10:12 pm #286791Anonymous
GuestI know for a certainty that our stake PR person has no such plans, and the matter was not discussed today in either the ward I was visiting or my home ward. (There was a brief mention in conversation by a guy I was talking to prior to priesthood.) Perhaps this is also a matter of local leaders doing what they think is right. GuestOur stake PR person spoke a few months ago – about what we can do to be more visible and helpful / service-oriented in the community as disciples of Christ. June 23, 2014 at 1:02 am #286793Anonymous
GuestIt could just be that he was good at addressing the topic and a lot of people in the congregation know he is a great guy. I just thought it strange that he identified his calling and said he was there on assignment from the SP at the start of his talk. Joni – eek maybe just a fluke

GuestI guess I’m not clear why the higher ups want to make it look like this current rash of threats to bloggers is locally driven rather than from the top. What is the difference? Trying to look less correlated? I don’t see a pattern of PR people taking over locally, by the way. That would reinforce the top-down mentality it appears the church is trying to avoid. Because SOP (and the handbooks) states discipline is done at the local level. It is the traditional pattern, I think it’s as simple as that. But not much is that simple.

GuestAs a practical matter bishops and branch presidents pretty much always discuss disciplinary actions with their stake and district president before proceeding and for something with a possible public relations aspect the sp and dp will clear it with the next person up the line. So, actions are technically local, but.. -
