Rereading Somerset Maugham’s “The Razor’s Edge”. I haven’t read it for a long while, but it is basically about a rich American Larry Darrell, in between the wars, who abandons his life, and ends up looking at Hindu mysticism. Because I haven’t read it for so long, it was like revisiting an old friend I hadn’t seen in a while.
It’s interesting, because while most ofthe characters try and bully Larry into leading a conventional lifestyle, including Isabel, his fiance… Larry is vindicated when the Stock Market crash of ’29 comes along, and wrecks their snobby lives.
(I never knew there was a film adaptation by the way, it probably softens the impact. As for the one with Bill Murray? I don’t believe that would work!!!)
