GuestI am not going to name names, but I have heard tell of a Mormon politician (not in USA!) who has been involved in some shady dealings. How can I find out whether he holds any high up callings, and how can I report this? (I have some quite solid evidence) I don’t like the church being brought into disrepute, and had to point out that a lot of his behavior was not Mormon.
(I think he is already being reported to tax authorities)
PM me if needs be.

GuestIllegal actions can be reported to local police. Personal actions that affect friends and family can be discussed with the person and the friends/family. The idea of a church hotline to report sin (or apostasy, etc.) rubs me the wrong way, it feels too much like Nazi reporting. Obviously I know nothing about the situation but those are my thoughts.
Edit: On second thought, if it is a leader that is harming people by way of his authority in the church – then yes that situation does need to be addressed. I would assume with the next step up the chain, depending on circumstances.

GuestIf it is illegal activity, it needs to be reported to the police – and, obviously, the evidence needs to be solid. I do NOT believe in reporting illegal activity to church leaders only. If it’s bad enough to be reported to anyone, the police need to be involved. If it is not illegal but “merely” immoral (for example, contrary to to the spirit of the temple recommend questions or causing serious disruption among the church community), it needs to be reported to a Bishop and/or whomever would be over any disciplinary council. In that case, I simply would make sure I felt it was serious enough to make an issue out of it – and, obviously, the evidence needs to be solid.

GuestI have just spent hours explaining to someone Mr X’s behavior is not
“Mormon”, and correcting someone’s suppositions about Mormonism.
* He is a political representative.
* His business corruption seems to be well documented.
* He has had to apologize already to local press for hypocrisy regarding
his political views vs business practices.
* Bringing the church into disrepute by having his Mormonism publicized
in connection with this.
* Some of this controversy has already reached television.
He has been reported to relevant tax authorities.
Why do I want to report him to the church? He is a political figure, and financial abuse of a church calling may be involved.

GuestIf he’s that high profile I would operate under the assumption that his BP and SP are already aware of the situation and I’d leave it to them to take care of it if they so chose. July 11, 2014 at 3:37 am #287588Anonymous
GuestI agree with nibbler. A similar thing happened in our Stake many years ago. It got to the SP before the general membership knew about it.
They took appropriate action on a very timely basis.
(It was a member of the Stake Presidency.)
