Does the church have rules on where a single adult in the their mid-twenties should attend church? The single adult is currently living in their parents basement apt. Donna, There is no hard and fast rule. Some at that age choose a local singles ward, others prefer to stay in their family ward. I have one daughter who loves the single’s ward, and another who bounces back and forth. She tried the single ward full time but it just didn’t work. Now she has her records in the family ward, but attends the singles ward activities.
I do know some Bishops who kind of “nudge” 20+ to the singles ward, but it’s not required.
Good luck. Does he have any friends in the area? What do they do?
In my day there was a plethera of options. Singles ward, University wards, family wards. This led to a lot of “ward hopping.” It is my understanding that this environment made young people difficult to track or have anyone responsible for them (who is your bishop if you jump wards every few weeks?). So now I understand that all the singles wards are geographical without overlap. You can attend your family ward or your singles ward but attending outside of your area is discouraged.
Thanks mom3 and Roy for you input. My son is still living at home. The ward sends his records to the singles ward. Then the sent them back to our ward. It is getting a little confusing. He hasn’t had any say in the matter. We found out from our HT that my son’s records were in our ward again. Our HT is assigned to visit my son. My son has been gone a lot this summer and hasn’t been to the singles ward. I guess when you don’t attend that’s what happens.LOL
Two of his neighborhood friends are still attending the singles ward. They thought it was weird that my son’s records were back in our ward. I don’t think it has anything to do with my son’s age. His friends are the same age. I definitely think my son needs to find out what is going on.
Sounds like your son needs to have a chat with the bishop. In my experience the church doesn’t just move records around willy-nilly, there are requests going out from somewhere. And, as far as I understand it, he may choose to either attend his “regular” geographic ward or the geographic YSA ward/branch – it’s not up to anyone else except him. He may need to make it clear to the bishops which one he wants his records to be in, though. His records being in the family ward don’t preclude him from attending the YSA ward, but it may exclude him from callings in the YSA ward and vice versa. Usually records are moved after a request from the new ward. Having said that, singles wards’ numbers get hit hard during the summer. As a way of counteracting this a leader may have records returned to home wards for anyone who hasn’t shown up for a while. They probably shouldn’t do this unless they know for sure a member wants to go back to their home ward, but in my experience there can be quite a bit of pressure to move “unknowns” out of the ward so they don’t hurt the numbers (home/visiting teaching, sacrament attendance, etc.) I’m not saying this is the reason why your son’s records were moved, but it happens.
As stated before, your son can choose which ward to attend. He should be able to just ask the membership clerk in that ward to keep his records there even if he is gone a lot.
What everyone else has said. In the case of student wards, records usually get sent back to the home ward if the person isn’t attending the student ward in order to allow the person to have a calling in the home ward, if desired. For student wards, it usually is a “positive” reason, unlike regular wards trying to “clean up” their records.
