A hymn is both an anthem and a prayer. This week out of the distant recesses of my mind came a childhood song from Mr. Rogers. After the recent events this summer, this song has become my personal anthem. It has replaced everything, except Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam. I thought I’d share my new hymn with everyone here, because we all do need to know we are loved and valued. Even if it’s only by Fred Rogers – a Methodist.

I LIKE YOU AS YOU ARE

    Quote:

I like you as you are

    Exactly and precisely

I think you turned out nicely

And I like you as you are

I like you as you are

    Without a doubt or question

    Or even a suggestion

Cause I like you as you are

    I like your disposition

    Your facial composition

    And with your kind permission

I’ll shout it to a star

I like you as you are

I wouldn’t want to change you

    Or even rearrange you

    Not by far

    I like you

    I-L-I-K-E-Y-O-U

I like you, yes I do

    I like you, Y-O-U

I like you, like you as you are

I love that. Good is good, no matter the source – and that is a core principle of our theology.

I love the Children’s Songbook – not every song, but SO many of them. I like a lot of the hymns in the adult hymnbook, but the percentage of kids’ songs I love is higher than adult hymns.
