GuestHi everyone. I saw this article the other day and thought you might all be interested. The new exhibits will address the multiple accounts of the First Vision, Nauvoo Polygamy, BofM translation methods.

GuestThanks, OON. I really do think the church leadership is trying to present things accurately now – while still obviously being from a “believing” perspective. It’s important to recognize that – and also that it’s not something that can be done overnight.

GuestGood news! My mind starts swimming in all the ideas of what we could see there. Will they portray Joseph with his face in a hat? Will they show his 1832 first vision account in an illustration of “The Lord” surrounded with angels? September 26, 2014 at 4:23 pm #289938Anonymous
GuestHey OON, long time no see. Thanks for stopping by and sharing this. I had read a couple articles about the museum renovation that were not as detailed as this one. I agree with the others who have posted here – I think it’s good and I think the church is sincere in being more open. I understand why they can’t just dump it all out on the table (don’t dump all at once! ) and I think they are doing things the right way.I just visited the museum in August, I think it was good and look forward to visiting an even better one.

GuestThere is an excellent interview on By Common Consent about the museum and the upcoming changes. I recommend it to everyone: “Interview: The Church History Museum” (

GuestAP article on upcoming opening of the CH Musuem… with quotes by Terryl Givens: http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_REL_MORMONS_HISTORY September 30, 2015 at 6:52 pm #289942Anonymous
GuestI belong to one of those closed facebook groups for believing spouses, and sadly a whole bunch of tree’s fell in the forest and no one heard them crash. Many of the believing spouses feel very robbed. For years they have held a faith that the church had been open, honest, etc. As of yesterday many of those spouses began a journey they weren’t expecting. I really do feel for the church on this. I do hope some healing between divided generations can happen. I hope stalwart believers will gain a place of empathy for the non-believers or lost believers. I hope the church rolls out a caring plan to train wards and stakes how to navigate this on the local level. I hear whispers of ideas in conference talks, but we have been spoon fed for so long, that it would be in the leaderships best interests to make a proactive approach to addressing the divide. – As usual they haven’t called to get my opinion, so this could take longer than I want. Darn it.

Looking for the other perspective (ours), I find it fairly easy to empathize with the believers. Maybe that’s because I was once one of them. (A silly thought just came to my mind – as they now are I was once was and as I now am they may become
🙂 ). In all seriousness, I think we need to be at least as accommodating to them as we hope they are for us, the old golden rule. And I agree with you Mom – we need to be more Christ centered more often. We gotta have more cowbell! (I’m feeling a bit cheeky at the moment.)

GuestThis is where practicing our religion comes into play, learning to love and have charity and be open to seeing the Lord’s way. The information is what it is. It is rolled out the way the leaders have chosen to handle it.
But there is no way they can spoon feed us. We have to process things through the lens of the true gospel.
Non-believers will point and say “See, we told you this stuff.”
Believers will point and say “See, the church is not hiding stuff.”
Some people will be surprised and wished it was released sooner or handled differently. Some spouses who dug their heels in and trusted their version of the church’s position may learn they over reacted or over compensated to visceral reactions from their non-believing spouses who were in Stage 4 and over reacted with anger and accusations.
As the dust settles, some will settle back to Stage 3 confident the church will guide them but hopefully have more compassion and a broader view of things, some will remain stage 4 in pain wishing more was done or not trusting anything, and hopefully some will find a way to move to stage 5 where they see it differently and accept multiple views are valid, whether in or out of the church.
The church has invested in a lot of museums and buildings and teachings. This is a good thing to include the things in the essays to get info out there if they want any credibility in the things they’ve invested in.

GuestI just read the article posted, and found myself with butterflies inside. If it goes far enough in disclosure, I see the museum as helping me personally address some of my concerns. I am less concerned with what happened historically than I am with why disclosure has been so … I want to say censored but that might be too strong. Hidden is a better word. I look forward to visiting it.

GuestSince I don’t live close to SLC, I hope to hear from some of you who visit the museum… to get the take of my StayLDS brothers and sisters. October 2, 2015 at 4:45 pm #289948Anonymous

Ditto. Not sure if we will be doing the Utah summer trip.October 7, 2015 at 4:04 pm #289949Anonymous
GuestI work uptown within walking distance of the place. I will take assignments to visit if you all want. I don’t know what the rules are about pictures, but if they don’t break any rules, I will post perhaps. You will all have to help me know what is right about this. Anyway,..I am certainly going to visit. I want very much to see a shift and some honesty happen OUT IN THE OPEN about this whole deal.
