I don’t know how much people are aware of this issue but for me I think it might be a deal breaker. http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/1739493-155/tribune-deal-news-newspaper-joa-digital I’ve sort of put in the background some of the stuff from church history and have tried to just accept the church as something that’s morphed into what it is now with good people trying to do their best. But at the same time I’m not “church broke” anymore so I guess we’ll see.

I hadn’t forgotten. It will break my heart when it ends. Crazy we are 170 years past trying to gain statehood but we still function like the problem exists.

So, if I read this correctly, the church owned Deseret News has somehow forged a deal that basically takes the lion’s hare of revenues from SL Tribune, making it unsustainable. That means it will close eventually, or at least, be at the beck and call of the church. Is that reading too much into the article? It doesn’t mention the church as far as I can tell. But that is what I got out of it. It implied we are going to have a correlated newspaper!

That’s basically it. The deal between the hedge fund that owns the Trib and the DNews was negotiated in secret and the split of the revenues that has been based on circulation was reversed when the News inflated the numbers from their new national addition that they basically just give away. The result to the Trib has been to cut about forty staff plus features features like the NYTimes news service and the religion section. It still could end up existing as an online only paper if it all plays out but then it wouldn’t be the independent counter balance that it has been. The editorial bent of the DNews is rightward as you’d expect and the Trib is more central to left and that would be lost with Utah becoming even redder. For me the problem with this is not only that it could mean that the Trib and all it does for the community would be lost but how it was done. To me the whole thing has been deceptive and has further eroded what was left in my faith in the church. The church owns and runs the DNews and these sorts of decisions aren’t being made without approval at highest level. I’m just really, really disappointed.
