I came across this heirarchy in a textbook on employee engagement. My initial thought was that it is also a good model for stages of motivation to serve within the church (not necessarily belief or faith, but motivation to serve): Rooted: Intention to Stay
Committed: To the organization, to the mission
Satisfied: with the experience, with treatment received
Engaged: possessing energy, enthusiasm and putting effort into the organization.
I am at the rooted stage right now. Don’t feel much commitment to the mission at all, or to the organization. Not satisfied with the experience or treatment received, and am definitely not engaged except in casual service on my own terms.
And you?
Interesting. I would say that my % of conviction goes down each level you go down. I intend to stay.
I am committed to most parts of the organization and much of the mission (but parts of both I am not).
I am satisfied with most of the relationships I form in my ward, but the higher up you go – the less satisfied.
I do still put effort forward in many areas that I feel are good (just glad they didn’t call me as WML!)
My comments remind me of a statement I heard of, “the church is true from the ward on down.” I have many issues with the church as a corporation. I don’t have nearly as much issue with working in my ward to be a Christian and give service to others.
I think it’s pretty obvious I am all four, but that’s because I have defined the parameters of the terms and the levels for myself. I’m engaged, which also (for me) includes the other 3. My “engaged” looks very different than it did 10 years ago.
I am rooted. I do not suppose that this is the fault of the church. There was a time when the church experience met my needs and I responded with high levels of committment and engagement.
My needs changed…
